almost monday
Alternative/Indie trio almost monday is simply one of a kind. The group of friends have grown up playing music together but only made their streaming debut earlier this year. Their song, “parking lot view”, gained significant traction across multiple streaming platforms and has continued to grow their loyal fanbase. They pride themselves on making fresh and feel-good music, which is evident in their infectious hooks and catchy melodies. This was most evident in their latest single “broken people”. The song currently has over 1.8 million Spotify streams and recently earned multiple spots on the platform’s curated playlists. Over their short time in the music industry, the group has already toured with names like AJR and were set on performing at this year’s Governors Ball before the pandemic. Now, almost monday returns with their debut EP which was released earlier today! We recently spoke with the group on the new project, favorite pastimes, and more!
How did you get started making music?
We all wanted to start playing live music so we threw our own shows at our buddy’s surf shop. It wasn’t until after playing live a bunch when we started to actually record songs and make it more of a priority.
You received well deserved critical acclaim on “broken people”; What was it like getting that kind of feedback so early on?
It really means the world. “broken people” was the first song we wrote and put out. To see people connect with it and enjoy it is super cool.
What has it been like working with a producer like Mark Needham?
Mark is such a legend and a good friend. It’s really nice to have someone who has been a part of so many amazing projects lend his skill to our music.
What are the best and worst parts about being in a band?
By far the best part is playing live shows. There’s nothing better than seeing people connect with your music in person. That being said, one of the worst parts about being in a band in 2020 is not being able to play live music to people in person.
Which artists have you looked up to in search of your sound?
I think there are a lot of different artists who have helped shape our sound. But some that we are constantly inspired by are David Bowie, Gorillaz, Justice, and Prince.
Describe this sound in just three words.
Feel-good, summery, fresh
How do you overcome writer’s block?
Writer’s block is an illusion. You have to keep writing through it even if it’s bad. Also, listening to new music and discovering new artists can help with finding inspiration.
Who are you teaming up with in a dream collaboration?
Frank Ocean, Robert Smith, Damon Albarn, Calvin Harris, Pharrell.
What do you guys like to do when you’re not making music?
We all like to surf and skate so we try to get a session in when we can. San Diego has some of the best waves and skateparks in the country so we’re pretty stoked!
Which song off the new EP is each of you most excited for people to hear?
We love all of them haha. We’re excited for people to hear it.
