Bassette
Since Bassette’s 2017 debut with her single “Suffocating,” the London-based artist has continued to reach new heights. Originally from Bermuda, the musician and her music — a mix of both impressive vocals and trap beats — boasts over 2.2 million streams on Spotify. She’s collaborated with artists such as SPR and Sensu, her most notable collaboration being with Mullally on “Sweet Coffee”. It’s a hit that has earned the artist over 1.4 million streams alone. Besides her distinct vocal talent, Bassette shines off the stage as well. 2019 saw the establishment of Silent Plug Records, founded and headed by none other than the artist herself, along with her management team. According to the singer, 2020 is looking to be her best year yet. We recently spoke with Bassette about her creative process, dreams, and more!
How did you get started making music?
As a child I had selective mutism, so I would not speak to anyone who wasn’t my parents or immediate family. Considering I didn’t really speak, I’ve always been drawn to singing— it’s something I just carried on doing from a young age. I started writing around 14 and going to the studio when I moved to London (age 19). Music is comforting for me. I’m always humming something. It’s just comfortable.
Walk us through your typical songwriting process.
There’s not really one process. I could be watching a movie when a melody or lyric will come to me, and I’ll sing it into my voice notes. I find I write best when I’m preoccupied with something else (like watching a movie), have a melody/lyric pop into my head, usually one line and I take it from there. You are most creative when your mind is relaxed, so I just lay down and write whatever comes. I like to write alone at my own speed as opposed to in the studio. My next single came to me in a dream!
Who would be a dream collab?
Hmm I would love to write with Julia Michaels and JP Saxe. I've been going through a breakup so maybe that’s why I’m drawn to them right now…
Dream venue?
Somewhere in an open space on a summer night. There’s an unused stage in Crystal Palace that would be pretty cool to perform on. It’s just floating in the middle of a pond.
Describe your music in 3 words.
Feel good, light, R&B.
Favorite non-music hobbies?
Selling things on eBay, annoying my sister, looking at my future houses on Google and designing the interior of my dream home.
Any future projects that fans can look forward to?
I’ve got a single coming out soon and then an EP soon after! OOH and I have a pretty cool animation coming out real soon for my latest single “The Fall”.
