foxgluvv
Pop artist Foxgluvv has made quite an impact on the music industry since she began releasing music in 2017. Her style combines LoFi beats, ethereal synths, and the camp of classic 1980’s pop music. Her first single “Crush” caught fire early, earning over 276 thousand Spotify listens. She has since released a series of singles that grew her fanbase and got her coverage in Billboard and Wonderland Magazine. In 2019, she released her EP I Never Felt Hollywood. The EP’s success was a clear indication that Foxgluvv is only getting bigger and better as an artist. Now, with over 9K monthly listeners and hundreds of thousands of streams on multiple songs, she hopes to continue her path to stardom. We recently spoke with her about the origins of her name, her dream collab, and more!
How did you get started making music?
I first started making music properly, and for myself, when I went to university in 2014. It took me a while to feel comfortable with the music I was making, because of stereotypes surrounding lesbian musicians and feeling as if I had to fit a certain “mould” to be successful. I soon realised that I should be making music that resonates with me, and my identity, and then Foxgluvv was born!
Foxgluvv is quite the name. How’d you decide on it?
My grandparents had Foxglove flowers growing up their drive when I was younger and I always loved them and thought the name was so cute and that they were beautiful flowers. I did some research and found out that they’re poisonous - which made them totally bad ass. I changed the spelling to make it a little more unique, and then it just kind of stuck!
Synthesizer is a staple in much of your work. What appeals to you about it?
I love the flavours of 80’s pop - there’s something about the nostalgia in those tracks that really inspires me and I feel like Synthesizer’s can sound so unique.
Who’s your pick for the collab of your dreams?
Ugh - I’d die if I ever got the chance to collaborate with Lady Gaga, or Madonna, or Charli XCX. They are the top three womxn in music that inspire me the most and I honestly love their music for different reasons.
What would Foxgluvv fans catch you doing in your free time?
I love graphic design, I do a lot of doodling on photoshop and I love writing blog posts. I’m a music editor at LGBTQ+ blog Unite UK, focusing on highlighting LGBTQ+ upcoming musicians.
Can you explain to us the influence of your sexuality on your music and creative process?
For so many years, my identity and sexuality held me back. So, now that I am a proud and openly gay woman, I try to incorporate who I am into my work as much as possible. If I can help one baby gay to feel seen, I’ve done my job.
Do you have any projects in the works?
I’m just enjoying being creative and writing music at the moment! Nothing set in stone, but I’ll definitely be releasing soon.
