Indi Star is a fitting name for an artist who is, quite literally, an “indie” star. At just 14-year-old, the Los Angeles-based influencer defies the norm, celebrating an impressive career in both the music and entertainment industries. She began this journey at the age of three, training in a variety of dance styles. The opportunity eventually led her to pursue acting, and after attending Gray Studios drama school, she scored her first part in the popular web series Teens Wanna Know.

Since then, Indi has seemingly done it all. From roles in Nickelodeon’s Henry Danger to being a Kidz Bop standout, the singer/songwriter has redefined the meaning of fame in the modern age. Many know best her as an internet star, too, as she is a member of the popular content collective The Vibe Crew. We would be remiss not to mention this social media presence – Indi sports an impressive 2.5 million followers across TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.

She now takes the next step in her career, putting the focus on her music – following the release of “Afterglow” earlier this year, the artist takes on a more mature sound. Her latest single, “Exposed,” is a testament to this, featuring pristine pop vocals and emotionally resonant lyricism. The song is accompanied by the music video released on Oct. 6. We recently spoke to her about the track, current and upcoming projects, and more!

Hey Indi! Congrats on the new single! How are you feeling now that it’s out?

Hi! I am so proud of “Exposed”! I worked so hard on this song and music video and had an amazing team who put in so much work and creativity. I am beyond lucky to have them to create with!

Can you walk us through the inspiration for “Exposed”?

“Exposed” is my second release this year with one more to follow. The three songs are a trilogy of the rise and fall of relationships. “Exposed” is about opening your heart to someone new after you have been hurt in the past! It’s really an emotional song.

How did this inspiration translate into the music video? (Which is stellar, by the way!)

Thank you! The music video for “Exposed” tracks the emotions of the song in different settings. There are times when I am vulnerable and lonely and then there are times when I am celebrating those feelings. It all came together, and I think the video really compliments the song and gives it more depth!

Was there anything particularly unique about your songwriting process this time around?

I have some amazing producers at Jenga Productions, and they put a lot of heart and soul into the songs we create together. I think my three new songs this year are really taking my music to a new mature level, and I am excited to see where we all go together!

What do you want fans to take away from the track?

I would love for my fans (all the stars in my galaxy) to really connect to the lyrics and the emotions in the song. It’s important to allow yourself to open up to people after you have been hurt but to do it in a way that makes you feel comfortable and also to do it on your own timeline.

You are a pop star for the modern age! With a career in television, dance, TikTok, and the music industry, do you have a favorite among the four?

I would say it's definitely a tie with singing and acting! I think that’s why I absolutely love making the music videos for my songs because I get to combine both singing and acting!

Do you find it difficult to find a balance between them?

It is hard to find a balance for sure! I think this is the year when I am starting to focus more on singing and acting and a bit less on influencer/content creation. I am still making content, of course, but it’s just bigger projects.

We have to ask about Kidz Bop! Do you feel like that experience has prepared you for your current endeavors at all?

Yes, Kidz Bop was a good experience for the most part! The training in vocals, dance, and stage presence was truly a gift that I have drawn on in my solo career.

Speaking of your current endeavors, let’s talk about Charmers! What has that experience been like?

I absolutely loved working on Charmers. Brat TV is amazing to work with and I loved playing Paris. I hope to continue playing Paris in a season 2 if and when it is announced!

How would you say the series differentiates from your previous acting work?

Paris was definitely my biggest role so far, so I think the character development I got to do as Paris was really great for my art. The longer I played her, the more I got to know who she really was!

What is your biggest piece of advice for someone coming up in the music and entertainment space?

Practice, practice, practice! You are up against a lot of people who want to be doing the same things as you! You have to really focus on what you want to do and keep improving! Also, surround yourself with the right people!

If you could start a content house, who are three other musicians/celebrities that you’d choose to take part in it?

Hmmmm… I have already done the squad/content house route and it's not easy! Putting that label on really puts this added pressure on the situation. I think the best route is to just create content with anyone you vibe with and to not necessarily limit yourself.

What are some of your favorite things to do outside of the music and entertainment space?

Some of my favorite things to do outside of the entertainment space is to draw, skate with my friends, swim, and spend time with my family!

Has there been a moment in recent memory that still feels surreal to you? Who do you owe your biggest thanks to?

Recently I have been doing a lot of brand deals with huge brands that I would have never thought I could have been in contact with. I am so thankful for my family for supporting so much in what I love.

Lastly, what can fans expect from you for the rest of 2021?

I have a new movie “The Hyperions” coming out in February 2022! Plus, I have a bunch of more music coming soon.
