Is BACK IN ACTION With A Wave Of New Music

By Eli Goodwin

At only 18 years old, the Indiana native Midwxst has cannonballed into the music industry, seeing as he has made, well, quite the splash. A full-time student at Belmont University, the up-and-coming artist views his songs as a way to “put out the thoughts and conversations [he] really can’t have with a lot of people … and a great medium to express how [he’s] feeling.”

Since the release of his single, “Liar,” in 2020, the artist has achieved this and more. Effortlessly blending the worlds of hip hop, hyper pop, and R&B, Midwxst is seemingly the poster child of musical versatility. This sentiment is all the more exemplified in his debut EP, BACK IN ACTION, that’s out today, as well as the music for video for his recent single “Tic Tac Toe.”

The video is a beautiful insight into the artist’s creative process, featuring a delectable fusion of anime and the real world. The song itself is equally as impressive, with a combination of electro and rap glazed over with heaps of musicality.

When he’s not in the studio, Midwxst is like the rest of us. He spends his free time driving, listening to music (he’s big on 90s hip hop and listening on vinyl), walking his dogs, learning the piano, and looking for inspiration, of course, something Belmont helps him with. “Belmont is such a great cesspool of talent,” said the artist, who is studying at the renowned school of music.

As his career continues to soar, Midwxst remains thankful for his humble beginnings on Soundcloud. “I got tips and tricks from literally half of the people I follow on (the platform),” he continued. “They've given me advice and tips on how to be a better artist that I still use and apply today.”

As for his own advice? It comes directly from a conversation he had with Tyler the Creator. “Make the music that you want to make over everything else.”
