nodisco.
With only four songs out, nodisco. is already establishing himself as a beacon of talent. His music is a delectable ode to classic pop and a pleasure to listen to. With song titles like “Thoughts From Your Car” and “Moonlight in my Bedroom” nodisco. brings casual to the next level, and his sound is resultantly intimate. Making his way onto the scene in 2019 with “Thoughts From Your Car,” the artist has raked up nearly 600k streams with a short discography and an even shorter year. More impressively, nodisco. (real name Chris) has found his way onto 3 Spotify-curated playlists. While his spot on Fresh Finds: Pop is sure to be celebrated, it’s the title of another playlist he’s on that perfectly encapsulates his music: Just Vibing. That’s what nodisco. does, he vibes. Sure, his serene vocals, impressive harmonies, and beautiful orchestrations can be attributed to his success, but the fact that nodisco.’s heart is clearly in the game is what distinguishes him from other artists. We recently spoke with the up and comer about how he started making music, what’s next for him, and more!
How did you start making music?
I’ve been making songs forever. I spent all my high school/university days with headphones in and once I finished, decided it was time to have my own vinyl on my wall.
It’s your day off: How are you spending it?
Ever since I started in September, I haven’t really felt like I’ve had a day off. I’m constantly thinking about what the next step is and how to get there. But when I’m actually just away from my computer, I’m usually listening to records and learning, or looking at old Rolling Stone magazines for visual inspiration.
What was the last song you listened to?
I’ve been listening to a bunch of Slowdive recently, particularly their record Souvlaki. Trying to integrate shoegazy elements to some of the future songs so I’ve just been plugged in trying to learn how they produce guitars so damn well.
“Thoughts From Your Car” is phenomenal. What was the inspiration for the song?
Thank you! “Thoughts” came to me literally as a freestyle when we we’re demoing it. I was 21 and about to finish university and was like “what am I going to do with my life?”. So it's a pretty accurate representation of my life when I was 21; ridded with hypochondria and not knowing what to do, so finding the only way to cope with that is to drive around aimlessly and spend whatever money I had on things I didn’t need. I think people assume that generalities make music the most approachable and widespread, but it’s crazy the amount of messages I’ve received about how even my oddly detailed lyricism in this song related so intensely to their lives.
Where is your go to location when it’s time to write?
My room. The whole mixtape that I’ve written was me confined to my room (that you see in the Moonlight in my Bedroom artwork and the Unrelated music video).
It’s collab time: who are you choosing to make a song with?
So hard to choose. But if I had to choose 3 just right now, I’d say John Mayer, Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis and Craig David. John for his storytelling, Jam/Lewis for their production techniques and Craig for his incredible melody writing.
Any future projects for fans to get excited about?
Yeah! Not giving too many details yet, but all the singles thus far and the upcoming ones will be part of a conceptual mixtape entitled, Who Knew I’d Write Songs About You?. More details to come in the future.
