Still Woozy
A+ DEBUT ALBUM AND 2021 TOUR BECKON NEW ERA FOR ARTIST
By Kenneth Tse
Personal and unabashedly unique, Sven Gamsky’s musical style is one that continues to seize the day. The artist, best known as Still Woozy, released his debut album on August 12th to critical acclaim. Fittingly titled If This Isn’t Nice, I Don’t Know What Is, the genre-fluid project serves as a breath of fresh air for those who are tired of the same old, indie-pop shtick.
Working alone for much of his solo career, the artist ventured a different path amidst the 2020 pandemic. He quarantined and collaborated with Lars Stalfors, a friend and producer who aided in the completion of the album. WIMITLA.’s Alix Negrin recently asked Gamsky about the experience via Universal Music Group’s 1824° virtual press conference.
“(Lars and I) would hang out every day at an Airbnb filled with instruments and talk for hours,” he said. “When you’re alone, it’s like you’re in this fishbowl (of thoughts and ideas) so I think it’s just important to process with people.”
The artist continued on about working with Stalfors. “At times, my brain isn’t very organized and it can be hard for me to get stuff done,” he explained. “(Lars) was like a drill sergeant in that he kept me organized and on task, which I didn’t even know was needed until then.”
If This Isn’t Nice is a showcase of what we know as the “Still Woozy sound” – one that’s ever-changing but never falling flat in emotional resonance. Songs like “Kenny” and “That’s Life” are a testament to this; the latter’s reflection on life’s highs and lows is admittedly one of his most personal and vulnerable works to date. Following the cancellation of his 2021 tour, Gamsky is now more excited than ever to bring these tunes on the road.
“I’m just looking forward to playing new songs and hearing people sing the lyrics,” he said. “Some of them are a lot faster than the other tracks that I’ve made, so I feel like it’s gonna get rowdy, which I’m excited for.”
Still Woozy’s enthusiasm for the album and tour is shared by many of his fans, which of course includes us as well! You can stream If This Isn’t Nice, I Don’t Know What Is now by following the link below!
