The Thing With Feathers

TTWF

The Thing With Feathers are “just four friends getting together, making music, and making memories'', according to frontman David Welcsh. This statement becomes incredibly obvious after listening to the band’s upbeat indie pop sound. They began as a group in 2017 and have since blossomed into the next up and coming talent. A catalyst for the experimental, songs like “Figure It Out” and “What You Want '' are just some of the group’s ever-evolving sound. The Thing With Feathers takes pride in connecting with their audience while continuing to make music that they are proud of. The collaborative effort by all members of The Thing With Feathers has clearly set them apart from the rest. We recently spoke to the band about their songwriting efforts, collaboration within the band, and more!

How did you start making music?

Dave: Well I was at a party and I saw this person wearing a dress, and I was like “wow, that’s a really tall girl, I’m going to say hi.” Well what do you know when they turned around, they had a beard; well, at least a stubble. It was Sean. I quickly found out he liked to play bass and I had just started a band at the time and I needed a bass player, badly. We had a few cast changes which is when Sean brought Alex in to play guitar and suddenly playing shows and writing started to feel a lot different. After a little bit more drama and an additional lineup change, Chris joined the band as our drummer just before we went on the road in the summer of 2018.

Favorite non-music activities?

Sean: We kind of have a mascot named Jeff, Jeff is my bearded dragon. We’ve all taken turns letting him crash with us but now he lives with me. The name has been a hot topic of discussion among us, everyone calls him Jeff but I call him Rafael Saadiq.

Where is the band’s go-to location when it's time to song write?

Alex: Usually one of us will bring an idea up at rehearsal and we will woodshed it until we get it right; sometimes one of us will come in with a whole song almost already written and we just need to piece it together. However, we would like to start destination songwriter trips together, so Disney better watch out.

What was the inspiration behind “Midwest Daydreams”?

Dave: “Midwest Daydreams” is about one of the less enjoyable mysteries of relationships. It is about the uncharted territory where your infatuations get the best of you and consume your being. It is about wanting what you know isn’t right for you and coming to terms with that realization. It’s a hard truth to bear but understanding the end of something inspires hope for something more.

What’s the best part about being a band?

There are many fruits to the work we do together as a unit. The greatest feeling is when we can really lock in and create something that we feel is right in the moment. Playing live is another beautiful feeling, a feeling we dearly miss. Being able to express ourselves in front of a crowd where we both give and receive energy are the moments

Who’s your partner in a dream collab?

Dave, Alex, and Sean: Kacey Musgraves, Phoebe Bridgers, Kevin Shields, Benny Sings, Justin Vernon, Rick Rueben, Toro y Moi.

Any future projects for fans to get excited about?

Sean: We have an EP coming out NEXT YEAR!
