Anna Shumate

Anna Shumate, (known as @annabananaxdddd in TikTok), is simply one of the app’s most popular creators. The 17-year-old is a native of Michigan and is currently starting her freshman year of college. Her content — a combination of dances, POV’s, and comedy shorts — has sent social media into a frenzy as of late. Shumate regularly gets millions of views per post, and has an impressive 4.7 million TikTok followers. She began like many, posting to the app as a joke of sorts. 175 million likes later and an Instagram following nearing 900k, Shumate has turned her viral fame into a social media career. We recently spoke to the creator about what she does on her day off, plans for the future, and more! 

Tell us a little about yourself.

I'm only 17 while going into my freshman year of college because of how late the cutoff was for my school. I live on an island in the Detroit River called Grosse Ile. I've played soccer since I was two.

Did you have any specific plans or ideas when you joined TikTok? 

I had no plans when I joined TikTok. I started it as a joke just to see what would happen and then within a few weeks I was already at 20k.

You’ve gained an incredibly large social media following since you first began on the app. What has been the best perk of your TikTok fame?

The best perk of this TikTok fame is that I have made so many friends and have gotten super close within such a short amount of time. 

What specific video, if any, do you credit for launching your TikTok career?

There were a few videos here and there that would get a decent amount of views on my account but one specifically in September that boosted my career was my nose scrunch video.

How has the pandemic impacted the way you make content?

The pandemic hasn't really impacted my content as much as I thought it would. I still sit in my room and make a few videos a day just like I did before the pandemic.

Who are you teaming up with in a dream TikTok collab? 

My dream TikTok collab would probably be Dixie D'Amelio because she's goofy and does whatever she wants and I think a video with her would be funny to make.

If you could have one super power, what would it be?

If I could have one superpower it would be to teleport. This is so I would be able to teleport to my friends across the country. 

What is one TikTok trend that you wish you could bring back?

One TikTok trend I wish I could bring back would be the "No Idea" by Don Toliver dance. Back when this was trending life seemed simpler and everyone seemed happier and TikTok was less toxic. 

What are some of your favorite things you do outside of making TikToks?

One of my favorite things to do outside of TikTok is play soccer. Whenever I get the chance to go up to the fields and just shoot around, I do.
