Talks Her Texas Upbringing, Advice For New Creators, And Plans For 2022
By Taylor Marie Contarino
Colleyville, Texas-native Avery Cyrus is no stranger to virality. After placing a bet against a college friend on who could get more TikTok views, she won and has dominated the platform's DIY space ever since.
Avery's warm and uplifting attitude quickly made her one of the most celebrated Hispanic and LGBTQ+ creators on the app, now inspiring a fanbase of over 7.3 million followers. DIY skateboards, cooking recipes, relationship content, and a whole lot more have earned her a staggering 230 million likes. She not only sets the bar high with this genuine approach to content creation but also sheds light on the LGBTQ+ Community by spotlighting her experiences and that of others.
To give further purpose to her platform, Avery recently partnered with TikTok to donate $10,000 to The Trevor Project, an American nonprofit focused on preventing suicides within the LGBTQ+ Community. The creator has also partnered with major networks and brands such as HBO Max, Amazon, YouTube, Venmo, Victoria’s Secret's PINK, and many more.
As the new year begins, Avery’s future is heading towards the stars. Amongst other projects, she plans to pair up with Space Hero to train as an astronaut and work towards space accessibility for all. We speak to her about her DIY projects, real estate plans, and more!
Hi Avery! I love what you stand for and how uplifting of a person you are! When did you first become such an empowering, warm individual, and do you have a background or reason for having such a kind aura?
Aw, that is so so sweet, that makes my heart really happy people think that about me. It also makes me really proud because I’ve always wanted to give others the love my parents gave to me. I think that most of my personality traits come from them. My mom is the most loving and selfless person that I have ever met, and my dad is extremely accepting and sympathetic.
Could you talk about your Texas upbringing and how it has impacted you?
I was born in Colleyville, Texas and I’ve always felt like I didn’t totally belong in Texas. My vibe was and is still more on the beachy and free side. I am really lucky though because I ended up finding a loyal group of friends early on that made things like coming out really easy.
Where do you spend most of your time free-time nowadays?
In my free time, I really like to spend my time outside at the beach, with friends, or exploring places I’ve never been to.
What made you first become interested in content creation?
I’d say that, since around the age of 14, my dream was to become a travel vlogger. I pretty much gave up on that dream when I had to go to college and pick a major. About a year into college, one of my friends made a bet with me to see who could get to 1000 views faster. I ended up getting a thousand or so likes on the first video I posted back in 2019 and just never stopped making videos.
Do you have any inspirations or role models when it comes to your digital creative side?
A few people that really inspire me are Miley Cyrus and JoJo Siwa. I love how they don’t care what other people think and I love how they just move to the beat of their own drum.
I noticed on social media that you seem to have a lot of hobbies outside of media creation, such as long/penny boarding and surfing! Are there any other hobbies you enjoy in your free time?
Yes of course!! My philosophy is “I’m down to try anything once." Right now, I’m in the process of making chocolate out of cacao fruit...I know, super random but I love to learn and pick up new skills. Some other hobbies I’ve picked up over the last couple of years are ceramics, building things like skateboards, rock climbing, working out, gardening, jewelry making, shoe customization, etc.
Your fashion sense seems extremely vibrant! Do you have a certain style you go for or any fashion icons you look up to?
Jojo Siwa for sure!
Do you have a go-to coffee or matcha spot?!
My all-time favorite ice latte is this little spot in West Palm Beach called Composition Coffee.
Who do you consider your biggest supporters?
Probably my mom, my manager Dylan, and my girlfriend Sophia!
Do you have any advice for viewers who look up to you when it comes to embracing yourself and becoming comfortable with all facets of yourself?
The best advice I can give to people is if you think you can’t do something, wear something, or be yourself because people think it's weird, chances are they are worried about the same thing!
Do you have advice for any up-and-coming content creators?
I know it sounds cheesy but, just do things that make you happy and things you are genuinely interested in because people can tell when it’s genuine.
What is your favorite type of content to create?
My favorite by far is the videos where I get to make and try new things!
What is it like working with Coloursound?
I honestly love it! It’s a really great and supportive environment. My manager Dylan is in this business for all the right reasons, he really tries hard to make sure everybody is secure and treated fairly no matter what.
Do you prefer TikTok or YouTube?
TikTok without a doubt!
What is your music taste like? Any favorite singers, bands, or artists?
My favorite artist of all time is definitely Miley Cyrus, but Billie Eilish is a really close second. Some very honorable mentions are Lana del Rey, Clairo, Kacey Musgraves, and Benne.
What can we expect from Avery Cyrus in 2022?
There are some really exciting things coming up! Some things have to do with space, others involving real estate, and of course more DIY videos!
