Tennessee native ohsobrkn (that’s pronounced “oh so broken”) is the latest up and coming artist to owe his start to Soundcloud, where he boasts over one million streams. Since his 2018 debut Spotify single “i’m an introverted mess,” the rising star has produced an impressive 22 singles along with two EPs and two albums. This includes collabs with fellow artists Powfu on “Can’t Wait” and fawlin on “Ghost Next Door”. Now out of college, he's moved to California and is ready to devote even more time to his music career. Through his music, a blend of lofi beats and alternative rap, the artist sets out to impact people the way his faith has impacted him. We recently spoke with ohsobrkn about the start of his career, his aspirations, and more!

How did you get started making music?

I was inspired at a young age to start making music by Eminem and Lil Romeo (weird combination, I know). I started to rap using a video camera, and that is where I learned how to better engineer music. I dabbled in all types of genres from alternative hip hop to pop, but during my sophomore year of college, I began producing beats by myself because Oliver Francis and nothing, nowhere inspired me to do so. During my junior year of college, I began making music as ohsobrkn, and I have continued producing and mixing the majority of my songs.

“pineapple pizza!” was not only a bop, but a major streaming success. Walk us through writing the hit.

It was a school night, and I remember laying on my bed with my feet up on the wall with the melody in my head, but no lyrics set in place yet. I thought, “What can I make this song about?” I wanted to be relatable and silly, so I decided on pineapple pizza because it is my favorite kind of pizza. At the time, and even now, I don’t like school (but I still encourage everyone to go because it’s most definitely important), and I wanted to make sure I incorporated my Christian faith, so that is why I talk about heaven, for it is going to be far better than school could ever be. The rest is just me being myself in the song, from playing games all the time to not doing very well academically, being silly, and loving God.

It’s collab time. Who are you choosing to make a song with?

Realistically, fawlin, David Alexander, Rxseboy, Powfu, nayl, and a bunch more. In my dreams though, I would love to work with people like nothing, nowhere, Cavetown, Sarcastic Sounds, brakence, Alexander 23, Alec Benjamin, Billie Eilish, and the list goes on and on.

Dream venue?

I’ve never done a concert before, nor have I ever been to one, so to be honest, I don’t know much about venues. However, it would be cool to do something in my hometown in Tennessee. There’s a small spot in Maryville, TN that I would love to go because it’s right near home, so it would be cool to experience that vibe because I love the country feel and atmosphere.

Describe your music in three words.

Honest, Christian, and Relatable.

Favorite non-music activities?

Playing Pokémon, cooking, hanging out with my girlfriend and her dog, fishing, exploring the outdoors, playing my switch and watching YouTube videos.

Any future projects for fans to look forward to?

I have two singles coming out, and an EP also being released soon. I am going to be redoing my YouTube channel with new and improved camera equipment to make videos that will help people make music. I will also be making another channel for people to get to know my life as a Christian in a deeper way.
