Abby Sage
Singer/Songwriter Abby Sage has blossomed into a talented indie artist through her distinct melodies and lyricism. She first began her music journey through her father, who taught her to play the guitar at an early age. And, after years of mastering her sound, the Toronto musician made her debut earlier this year with “Holy Water”; the release, along with the more mellow “18 Years,” have given her a unique vibe and a growing following. Abby’s music resonates clearly with listeners, drawing them into the worlds she paints. Already featured on Spotify’s Fresh Finds and Fresh Finds: Indie playlists, the 22-year-old is off to what is sure to be a bright career. We recently spoke with Abby Sage about where to catch her out of the studio, the meaning behind some of her work, and more!
How did you start making music?
I got into music from my dad's influence, he taught me guitar and just got me excited about performing and creating whenever I would watch his bands play. I love to write about anything and everything, lyricism has always been at the forefront of my musical journey. I would sometimes get to sneak into some of his bar performances and watch him when I was really young. It all seemed so magical then which is why I took such an interest in it all.
What do you like to do when you’re not in the studio?
Recently, I've been doing a lot of reading, I've been designing tops out of old fabrics in my house and getting familiar with fabric printing. I also am a god at candy crush, I think they're making new levels for me and only me.
Who are you working with in the collab of your dreams?
That's hard, right now I would say Celeste or Julia Jacklin, and create a ballad of some kind. They both have such deep cutting voices and such powerful lyricism I would love to work with them.
Describe your music in just 3 words.
Hmm maybe dreamy, honest, and evolving.
What was the last song you listened to?
Last song I listened to was “After You've Gone” by Dinah Washington (originally written by Marion Harris) I wanted to cover it and just got lost in listening to it again and again, fell asleep to it last night.
Which song is your most personal?
“18 Years” is my most personal. It's about living in a state of longing for someone who meant so much to you in the past. It's for that "what if" person, the one you hold onto just a little tighter than the rest thinking maybe down the road you will cross paths again. I've found closure since writing this song however, I've noticed how this one has connected with people which is all I could ever ask for.
Any future projects for fans to get excited about?
Yes! I'm actually in Toronto right now getting ready to record a project! I have a lot of sad shit written so I guess prepare for that.
