With only two songs out, New Jersey native Sam MacPherson has already made his mark on pop music scene. The 23-year-old singer/songwriter’s distinct vocals blend wonderfully with whatever’s backing them, be it the acoustic guitar of his debut single, “Something Simple,” or the LoFi beats of his second, “No Bad Memories.” The artist has been put on 5+ Spotify-curated playlists in his short career, including Fresh Finds and Best New Pop. And, with tens of thousands of Spotify streams to go along with a growing fanbase, we’re sure to be hearing more from MacPherson in the years to come. We recently spoke with the up and coming artist about his writing process, to whom he owes his thanks, and more!

How did you start making music?

I’ve always messed around with instruments growing up, but I didn’t start making my own music until freshman year of college.

What was the last song you listened to?

Last song I listened to was “Majoria” by Rayland Baxter who I am probably a super-fan of.

What do you like to do when you’re not in the studio?

I like to surf with my best buds, and I try to stay active and move around every day. I like to be creative in ways outside music whether that’s writing or drawing. I read a fair amount of books and eat a fair amount of Cheez-Its too.

Where is your go-to location when it’s time to write?

My little studio set up in my basement is where I usually lock myself away for hours when I feel like I have something to say.

Who’s your partner in a dream collab?

Frank Ocean.

Who do you owe your biggest thanks to?

My parents. The person I am is largely a product of who they are and all of the love and support they’ve shown me. My little brother is also someone I look up to as a person and a musician. I am one lucky kid.

Any future projects for fans to get excited about?

Absolutely. A few more singles coming out and a project before the end of the year!
