We spoke to Ashley about “FEELS LIKE THAT,” to who she owes her biggest thanks, and more! Scroll down to read our full conversation!

Ashley! Thanks so much for speaking with us today. Tell us a little bit about yourself! How did you get started making music?

Of course, thank you for having me! Honestly, I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. I grew up singing in the church choir, always surrounded by music. When I got to high school I started to write songs and understand my passion for music. Entering college I was figuring everything out until I realized that music was what I wanted to pursue full time. From then on out I have been diving deeper into my style, roots, and culture in relation to my sound!

“FEELS LIKE THAT” marked your first solo single since 2018 – how did it feel to release the track?

It’s so crazy to think about! This track is my most refreshing release thus far. I was able to showcase myself as an artist and I find that to be one of the most genuine parts of music.  When the song dropped I was insanely excited - my sound went from a wider showcase of electronic pop music to an rnb, pop, electronic, hip hop record!

With that said, it’s unreal! Can you walk us through the inspiration for the song? Was there any difference in your creative process this time around?

Thank you so much! When my producer Rommii and I were creating the song our intention was to make something unique while incorporating my favorite genres of pop, R&B, electronic and hip hop. I wanted to represent the fact that I’m from the Bay Area too which is a statement as the 808s come in. This time around I would say that my writing process has changed when it comes to choosing the right melodies/sounds. I could notice myself saying no to melodies I would have said yes to in the past; I’m searching for the best melodies that feel the most right. I’ve been pushing myself to do the best that I can.

2021 marks four years since your streaming debut! What do you feel has changed most about your music since?

It really has been four years! I would say that my musical approach and musical style have changed the most since. Looking back at my songs I have tried out a few different genres ranging from R&B to pop to electronic pop. I wanted to create a sound that makes me my own artist and I’m happy to say that I feel like I am finally finding my own style! I have also expanded my music taste in terms of what I listen to on my own so that I can have an even more open mind to new sounds. My style now reflects my culture and incorporates a twist on genres such as pop, R&B, electronic, and hip hop music.

Has there been any moment on this journey that still feels surreal to you?

Honestly, everyday feels surreal. I’m filled with so much gratitude for every blessing that has come my way. This ranges from talking with supporters all over the world who listen to my music, to forming new relationships each day. One moment in particular that stands out is when I got my first radio play on 99.7 NOW in the Bay Area. This moment was insanely wild and motivating at the same time. It was a “this is insane. don’t stop, keep going” type of moment.

If you could build a Mount Rushmore of the greatest artists of all time, who are the four that you’re choosing?

I would choose Michael Jackson, Ariana Grande, Kehlani, & H.E.R.

Which song would best describe your life at the moment?

“Universe” by TY Dolla $ign & Kehlani would best describe my life right now. “The universe must want me to win, I’m happier than I’ve ever been.” I’m starting to live in the moment and really keep a positive energy!

Describe your music using just three words.

Energy, Cool, Authentic

What are some things that you like to do outside of the studio?

Outside of the studio, I like to kick it with friends & family! I also have been into going on walks recently as well as indoor cycling. I honestly would say that indoor cycling is my second passion, I’ve been obsessed for the past few years now! I’m also a fan of trying new things whether it's an activity or food! We definitely got a lot of food places in the Bay that I’m always looking to try!

Who do you owe your biggest thanks to?

I owe my biggest thanks to my family, friends, and all of my supporters. I honestly would not be here without the love, support, and good energy they send my way. I am so appreciative of everything they do and have done for me!

What can fans expect from Ashley Mehta in 2021?

In 2021, I’ll be releasing music consistently, music that I’ve never made anything like before. I’ll be performing, connecting, and sharing all of this new content with all of you! I’m ready to showcase the freshest me, the latest of wherever my mind takes me! I’m so thankful for the love and support I receive!

When Ashley Mehta makes it to LA, ______________.

You’ll probably find me at a restaurant trying some new food! LOL but on my way there & back I’ll be bumpin 'my latest music. It's just the beginning!
