Bryony Williams is just what the indie rock scene needed. She began releasing music professionally way back in 2015, and has slowly been growing as an artist ever since. Her solo career has birthed songs like the popular "I Can Be” and “Honey”, significantly increasing a loyal fanbase. Her debut EP Conscious was released in 2018 and contains some of her most popular music to date. Over the course of her career, Bryony has played across the UK at festivals and concerts, and has even received play time from BBC Radio. Her feature on Spotify’s Fresh Finds playlist is yet another indication that her music is reaching an audience that is eager to hear more. We recently spoke with Bryony about her origins as a musician, her writing process, and more!

How did you start making music?

It all started when I wanted to be a Rockstar at the age of 9 – standing on stage with a bright red guitar and all the stardom. I blame my dad as he bought me up on Prog Rock and all that, from The Beatles to The White Stripes, Kate Bush to Nirvana. My first concert was Paul McCartney at the age of 6! So for my 9th birthday, me and my dad went to the local music shop and we got that red guitar! A ¾ squire and I of course still have it to this day. Though that dream faded since I didn’t start guitar lessons till I was 13 -15. During that time I was writing pretty emo things in my diary and turned them into songs! I didn’t actually realize I could sing until I was 16, thanks to my music teacher in school. Then from 17 onwards I started recording and releasing music and here we are now.

Who’s your choice for a dream collab?

Well it only seems fitting since I had a dream about all three of them last night! They were in my yard and I made vegan chili JUST IN CASE and then they didn’t even want any. Anyway, Haim.

Where is your go-to location when it’s time to write?

I have three particular places. 1) My bedroom – this is usually where I write on my acoustic guitar 2) In my home studio – this allows me to use Logic and mess around with all types of sounds and to record demos 3) I have a little hide-out in the woods nearby where I’m surrounded by trees and nothing else – that’s when I’m really alone with my thoughts

Describe your music in just 3 words.

Honest, sad, fun

Where do you draw inspiration from when making music?

My emotions; that’s why my songs are so raw and can be quite YIKES if you read between the lines. They are packed with emotion which is why I’m pretty calm in person. Though in order to write about my experiences…I have to be open to adventure, lust, risk, and generally making a fool out of myself.

Who do you owe your biggest thanks to?

My parents 100%. They have always not only supported me always but influenced and encouraged my musical beginnings. Without them I wouldn’t have such opportunities or drive. However, also my producer, Matthew Pinfield. He’s always been able to push me that little bit further and bring out the best in me.

Any future projects for fans to get excited about?

My next record, “State I’m In”, is coming out this fall! Which is available to pre-order now over at bryonywilliams.bandcamp.com. Before then though, a couple of special things are going to be released… so keep your eyes and ears peeled for that. Plus me and the label are in the planning stages of a 2021 UK tour!
