Sonny Winnebago

Australian-born and Wales-based musician Sonny Winnebago brings his unique energy to every song he makes. The talented oddball-type has an infectious feel-good vibe to every bit of music he puts out. He debuted in 2019 with “Take Me For a Ride”, a single that now has 6K streams on Spotify alone. In 2020, he released a collection of singles, including “Little Sun”, his most successful song yet. It has 30K streams, a huge jump and a sign that his career is far from peaking. In fact, he’s only been growing as an artist since his start. With an international audience of 15K monthly listeners and a feature on Spotify’s Fresh Finds: Indie playlist, we can’t wait to see where his career goes next. We recently spoke with Sonny about his musical inspiration, the future of his career, and more!

How did you start making music?

It was almost out of necessity! When I moved to Wales I didn’t have any friends, so I found that writing music was a really satisfying way of expressing myself. 

What’s the toughest part about writing/producing a song?

Oosh. I’d say it’s keeping those initial resonating aspects consistent throughout the whole process. The end result is quite a miracle, when you think about how many potential factors can dilute that pure thing you started with.

What was your inspiration behind your song, “Little Sun?”

I’d been living in London & working in a coffee shop for a few years. Even though I loved my job, I started to feel a bit trapped in a routine, but had no idea what I wanted from life. I began to write down all my thoughts and it turned into “Little Sun”!

What’s your favorite non-music activity? 

Making & drinking coffee! I’ve also starting painting, which I film myself doing on Instagram.

What do you love most about being a musician?

It might sound a little cheesy - but it’s the people you meet! Honestly, I’m so lucky to be a part of Cardiff’s vibrant & blossoming music scene. Anything goes & everyone’s so unique and talented.
