Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist Cassie Marin is an artist for the digital age. Through five years-worth the professional releases, the singer/songwriter has served as both the vocalist and producer behind all of her indie-electronica tracks. Intricate beats and thought-provoking lyricism are textbook for Marin, who continuously draws listeners into a world of her own making. Songs like 2017’s “Light” and her more recent track “Everything You Could Want” are a testament to this – Each of them showcase a pristine and singular amount of depth and musical fluidity. Her latest release, “Busy Body,” envokes more of the same. Originally written as a freestyle, the song describes "the fear of being watched and the obsessions of being the watcher in a digital world.” We spoke to the singer about her newest single, advice for up-and-coming artists, and more!

Hey Cassie! Congrats on the new release – It’s stellar! How are you feeling now that the song is out?

Thank you! I’m very happy! It feels like I’ve been waiting forever to share this one.

There is such an interesting premise to the song, can you walk us through that?

“Busy Body” originally came to life as a freestyle, which is becoming more normal for me with my songwriting. It’s about the fear of being watched and the obsessions of being the watcher in a digital world.

How does “Busy Body” differs from your previous releases?

I’d say it differs from some of my other releases because I not only embodied a character with the songwriting but also through the visuals.

It’s no secret that technology and social media have greatly affected the younger generation. What are some ways that you detox from the madness?

I set certain boundaries for myself with using my phone (like leaving it in the kitchen when I go to sleep) and try my best to pay attention and notice how particular things make me feel. It’s important to remember that the world that algorithms show you are very small.

We also have to ask about the hair in the cover art! It’s so dope – What inspired the look and, more importantly, how is it doing that?

Thank you! The visual aspect of “Busy Body” was inspired by one of my favorite movies, Cable Guy starring Jim Carrey. Basically, I wanted hair that made me look like I was electrocuted and my very talented friend Kayla made the magic happen with my hair, especially since it used to be crazy long before I cut it.

You’ve been writing songs pretty much your entire life. Do you remember the first one you wrote and what it was about?

The first song I wrote was a composition on the piano when I was 9 years old. It was a melancholic piece about feeling like an orphan.

You’re the lead songwriter and producer on every one of your songs. Do you have a preference between the two?

I’m really drawn to both roles but it’s still fun to collaborate with other producers and focus on the songwriting when there’s a connection there.

2021 marks your fifth year of professional releases – How would you say your music-making process changed from then to now?

Quite drastically, really. I don’t really take breaks anymore, music has fully consumed my life and I really like it that way!

Has there been a moment on this journey that still feels surreal to you?

It’s still very surreal to me every time I sing live for people. It’s become one of my favorite things to do and I used to be terrified of the idea as a kid even though I wanted to do it so badly.

If you were to host a music festival, which three artists would you choose to headline the event?

Toro Y Moi, me, and Skrillex.

What is one piece of advice that you’d give to an up-and-coming artist?

I would tell them that their art has an intrinsic value not determined by streams or followers, focus on that value, never lose sight of it, and work very hard. There are so many little details that lead you to where you are at any present moment.

Who do you owe your biggest thanks to?

I guess I’d have to thank every atom in the universe!

What can fans expect for the rest of 2021?

They can expect things ;)
