Misty Mtn
Makes Their Stirring Return With “In The Deep End”
By Eli Goodwin
Mo Trunzo and Lucas Segall make a stirring return with “In The Deep End” – the duo forms Misty Mtn, a project that has gained much acclaim since its 2017 inception. After meeting in Los Angeles, the couple has traversed the country together, spending time and making music everywhere from Brooklyn to Montana. “In The Deep End” serves as a snippet to their upcoming sophomore EP coming out this November, featuring an eclectic pop hybrid sound with emotionally candid lyricism to match. We recently spoke to Mo and Lucas about how their music has evolved since their first EP, the pandemic's effect on their creative processes, and more!
Hey Misty Mtn! First of all, congrats on the new single; “In The Deep End” is fantastic. How are you feeling now that it’s out?
Thank you! We’re feeling so good that “In the Deep End” is finally out. It’s such a deeply personal song for us and really feels like something that a lot of people could relate to especially after such an isolating year. So it feels like a good first step back into releasing new music again.
Can you walk us through the inspiration for the song?
Yeah, you know the idea initially sparked from a neighbor we had who lived in this incredible house but who was always just alone, in the same spot every day, sitting by the pool. And I think at the time we were already talking about the meaning of friendship and how so much of friendship is just being around for the fun stuff but not really wanting to stick it out when someone is really going through it.
What made your music-making process different this time around?
I don’t think we’d really say our process was different this time around per se, I think we just finally let ourselves be a little bit free-er than we’d been in a very long time. We spent more time just following the path the song wanted to go vs putting unnecessary pressure on ourselves to finish it in a certain amount of time or make it “perfect”.
You two celebrated great success off your debut EP – How would you say your music has evolved since then?
I think it’s honestly evolved just as we’ve evolved as people. We’ve learned a lot more about ourselves, which I think you can hear in the lyrics and production. Also playing live as a band so much (pre-pandemic) has really affected the way we think about putting songs together.
What do you feel is a textbook quality of every Misty Mtn song?
Nostalgia. We want everyone who listens to Misty Mtn to be taken back to a specific moment in time in their lives.
If you were in charge of a music festival, who are the three artists that you’re choosing to headline the event?
Caroline Polachek, Frank Ocean, Empress Of
Which Misty Mtn lyric would you say best describes your life at the moment?
Well then we’d have to reveal the title of our next song… stay tuned.
Has the pandemic affected the way you make your songs at all?
I think it’s forced us to allow our songs to marinate. So instead of putting all our energy into one song, we’re working on multiple songs at the same time. So if we get stuck on one, we work on another one, and in doing so that allows us to come back to the one we were stuck on and more times than not solve the problem, or realize we’re not really invested in that song as much as we maybe were before and just move on.
What are some of your favorite things to do outside of the studio?
Go on bike rides, try new food, drink *too much coffee*
Who do you owe your biggest thanks to?
As cheesy as it sounds just everyone who has believed in us thus far. Anyone that has come to a show, or purchased some merch, or streamed our music.
What else can fans expect from you in 2021?
More music, more videos, more shows (fingers crossed), and hopefully just more fun.
When Misty Mtn makes it to LA, we’re getting sushi.
