Eppic
With over 7.5 million plays on Spotify and hit singles such as “Hide and Seek” and “By No Means,” it’s no secret that Eppic’s had his fair share of success. Since his debut in 2011, the snickerdoodle and Tokyo enthusiast has been able to maintain his seat at the industry table. The artist has worked with names like Lindsey Sterling and Tyler Ward, and continues to pump out music in 2020. His most recent single, “Dethroned,” was released in early February. He shows no signs of slowing down, owning his unique blend of hip hop and grunge. We recently talked to him about his past collaborations, love for all things anime, and more!
How did you get started making music?
When I was 11, I saw Eminem's movie 8 Mile and I fell in love with the art of rap. When I first heard “Lose Yourself,” I was captivated by how Eminem told his story through rhymes. After the movie was over, I instantly grabbed a piece of paper and a pen and ran to my room to write my first rap which was about Kobe Bryant and hashbrowns. Fast forward to my 14th birthday, my dad got me ticket's to Eminem's “Anger Management 3” concert and that experience changed me forever. I've been creating music since then and I've never looked back.
What is your newest single, “Dethroned,” about and what went into writing it?
“Dethroned” is about eliminating the things that I gave power over my life. I let a lot of negative voices, fear, mistakes, and shame weigh me down and ruin how I saw myself. Internally, I was a mess. All of this consumed my thoughts and controlled how I lived my life until I woke up one morning and I felt God say, "It's time to dethrone all of this." With these things ruling my life over the last few years I wasn't living in freedom. “Dethroned” is my battle cry and my way of saying that I'm taking my freedom back. There is only one who belongs on the throne and for me that's Jesus.
What are some upcoming projects you’re looking forward to?
I'm in the middle of working on my Dethroned EP. The next single off the project will be out in July. It's taken me 4 years to write this one and I believe it's the best song that I've written. It's called, “Never Cease to Amaze Me,” and I'll let the song speak for itself. Oh and there's a song on the project that I don't think the world is ready for. Let me just say that it's completely different than any song that I've put out.
Which artists would you say have had the greatest impact on your work? Who would you consider a “dream collab”?
Every artist that I have collaborated with or have had the chance to have a conversation with has had the greatest impact on my work. I have learned so much from being in the room with so many different creators and I apply what they've taught me to every writing session that I step into. Eminem and Hayley Williams would be my dream collab. No question.
Favorite non-music activity?
Does binge-watching anime count? Also, I really enjoy hiking, immersing myself in a good book or movie, and going on 2-mile runs.
