fawlin

fawlin is a musician at his finest; he writes, sings, and even, on occasion, mixes his own songs. With the help of fellow producer and best friend Einar Eriksen Kvaløy, he creates a unique soundscape with every song he makes. His two-man approach to music has earned him over half a million streams on Spotify. The Norweigan artist leads a double life; both a PR student in Oslo and a musician, he’s worked with artists like XAM, ohsobrkn, and Braden Ross. Since his 2019 debut with “right now,” fawlin’s produced 7 more singles, his music best described as soft rock, evident in his latest hit “all summer.” With an electric guitar, clear vocals, and emotionally honest lyrics (with the occasional beat in the background, ie: “let u go”), the 23 year old is making a name for himself in the industry as an up and coming artist. We recently spoke with fawlin about his favorite era of music, his songwriting process, and more!

How did you start making music?

I've loved music since I was a baby and I've been singing for as long as I can remember. In elementary school I started taking guitar and singing lessons and I was also writing some songs back then, not a lot, though. I remember being very inspired by Owl City back then and I used to try and write songs like Adam Young, haha.

Describe your typical songwriting process?

This process is maybe not the most interesting one, haha. Before I used to write songs at random occasions like if I randomly found some inspiration while being on a walk or something, but now I usually just sit with my guitar or listen to guitar samples and take it from there. Like if I find a vibe from what I'm playing on the guitar or some sample I usually get in this zone where I just start off writing about a certain feeling I get that maybe reminds me of a time/story. Then the rest just comes naturally. I don't always write about my own life either, could just be one of my friends' story or just some movie I saw.

What are your favorite things to do when you aren’t making music?

I watch a lot of movies and I've recently picked up skateboarding again so I've been doing a lot of that. I also like to work out and hang out with my friends.

What’s your favorite era of music and why?

Oh, this question is hard for me actually. This may be an unpopular opinion but I think I'll have to go with the 00's. So many great albums were released in that time period if you ask me. I'm a big fan of emo and I used to listen to a ton of Mayday Parade, Taking Back Sunday and Boys Like Girls. That's also around the time I grew up and I realized how big of an impact music had on my life and still have. I also grew up on a lot of music from the 70s and 80s, though, since my parents played that a lot. My father is a big Earth, Wind & Fire fan and my mom's a fan of Micheal Bolton, I also discovered The Smiths by myself and have been listening a lot to them. But I would have to say the music from the 00's has had the biggest influence on me.

Who’s your partner for a dream collab?

My dream collab would probably be blackbear or nothing, nowhere.

Take us through your inspiration in making “right now”.

I had just moved from my small hometown in Norway to the Capital for studies and to focus on my music. This was a scary feeling because I felt like I had to sacrifice a lot, it took a lot of me to go through with it. I felt like I had left many people behind so because of that I went in the studio that day with a lump in my throat, I had to get it all out. This was one of those songs I wrote in 5 minutes, tops. It felt very relieving writing the song, because I feel like it's got this good energy about letting go and believing in yourself. So everytime I listen to that song nowadays I feel proud that I went through that period with such a positive attitude.

Any future project for fans to get excited about?

Oh yes! I've been releasing at least one song each month throughout the year and I'm stoked to announce the release of my debut EP scheduled for next year. So be on the lookout for some new music!
