The members of indie pop band Hate Drugs are far from new to the music industry scene. As they approach their 6th anniversary as a band, their distinctive sound continues to set them apart from the rest. Rich feeling, powerful lyrics, and dreamy pop melodies are what define their music. The group’s use of guitars and synths on 2016’s Beach Weekend EP are a clear ode to the classics of the 60’s. Since then, Hate Drugs has released a dazzling effort comprising full length albums, EPs, and a group of singles. This includes songs like “Drive Me Crazy” and “So Cruel”, which both received significant streaming success. Their latest song, “Can’t Shake That Feeling”, was released earlier today! We recently spoke with the band about their start, favorite pastimes, and more!

How did you start making music?

My brother and I started making music at a really young age. Our dad is a musician, so there were always instruments around the house. We grew up watching our dad play and learning what we could from him. It was so nice to grow up surrounded by good music and cool toys.

What do you love most about making music?

I think the freedom of expression in music is so amazing. The ability to express emotions through sounds and tell a story always drew me in. It’s the perfect creative outlet. You can say whatever you want, or even say nothing and still say so much.

What’s something you love to do in your spare time?

If I didn’t spend so much time and energy making music, I would probably just be in the water surfing all the time. It’s my happy place. I feel centered and recharged when I’m in the ocean. I think it’s really important to connect with the natural world. It puts everything in perspective.

You’ve toured across the country with great bands like Dayglow, HARBOUR, and The Grinns. What has been your favorite performance thus far?

Our last shows of 2019 were probably our favorite. We did a run of shows with Fashion Jackson and Bay Faction, and then played a big one at the end of the year at the Glass House in Pomona. We definitely miss playing shows. It’s our favorite part of the whole band experience.

What’s your favorite song to perform?

“So Cruel” has always been one of our favorite live performances, but I think a couple of the new songs that we’ve been writing might take the cake.

If you could collaborate for one person, who would it be?

Justin Vernon or Frank Ocean. They are both major influences.

What are you planning for the future?

We want to create a really special show for our fans. So we are working on that, and also working on new music. It’s a weird time to be a band but it’s so nice to have each other for support and encouragement through these strange times.
