Inwards
Inwards is no stranger to the music scene. The UK native has been making songs for much of his life, finally taking on his stage name in 2013. With a clear knack for experimentation, the multi-instrumentalist and producer seems to consume an incredibly distinct niche. Since making his Spotify debut in 2018, the artist has released a slew of music including three EPs and two full length albums. His latest, Bright Serpent, contains some of his most unique and popular music to date. The melodic “Tottertot” and more upbeat “Feelings Of Unreality” are just two examples of this unique sound. With this growing success and over 20k monthly listeners, it’s fair to say that Inwards is far from slowing down. We recently spoke to the artist about his favorite pastimes, a dream collab, and more!
How did you start making music?
I started playing guitar and played in a couple of bands until I found that I was way better at playing the drums. I started experimenting with making music on Reason in 2008 and felt a lot more freedom and able to express my ideas better. After the end of my last band I decided to take things into my own hands and make my own project. As confidence grew in producing my own tracks I started playing out live and it just went from there really, I got a few synths and a drum machine after coming home from bangface 2012 where I was lucky enough to meet my hero Aphex Twin. This was a huge inspirational moment where I realised that making music was the only thing I wanted to do in life!
What do you like to do when you’re not in the studio?
At the moment I am building a new studio from scratch so that's taking up a lot of my time. Sometimes I get back into skateboarding until I hurt myself and then think maybe I am getting to old for this. I used to love going to the sauna before it got shut down. I teach music production at a college which is great fun and feel lucky to be able to work with people that have so much passion and energy for making music.
