JRM
Jaramye Daniels, better known as JRM, has already accomplished what many artists can only dream of. The LA-based, Philadelphia native started his career in the music industry as a songwriter, working with big names like Kygo, Lukas Graham, Beyoncé (“All Night”), Teyana Taylor, and Martin Garrix. The Howard University alum has also provided vocals on a number of these tracks, grossing over 50.5 million Spotify streams in the process. His work with this long list of top tier talent has earned Daniels a Grammy nomination -- and, if that wasn’t enough, he’s even started his own record label, Short Weeks. Despite all of this, Jaramye is perpetually ambitious, continuing to grow his career with his next endeavor: going solo. His debut single, “America” serves as a clear voice of activism, speaking out against police brutality and racial inequality. We recently spoke with JRM about the new single “America,” his prior experiences with the music industry, and more!
How did you get started making music?
I started off touring and singing background vocals for Marsha Ambrosius from Floetry and Lil’ Kim, which eventually led to me trying to write my own music.
How do you spend your days off?
My days off are usually spent hanging with friends having a few drinks or alone in bed watching TV and ordering take out.
As a songwriter, you’ve written on behalf of some of the keystones of today’s music, including Beyoncé for her song “All Night.” Can you describe your songwriting process, especially when it’s for someone else?
My songwriting process differs depending on the day and the vibe. Sometimes I start off with melodies and sometimes I dive straight into lyrics or concepts.
As an artist, you’ve collaborated with some of the industry’s biggest names, from Martin Garrix to Jessie Reyez. What was it like?
Martin and Jessie were great. I feel like we really connected on a musical and friendship level so working with them was easy. It was more like just hanging out and making music!
You’ve been nominated for a Grammy for your songwriting chops. Can you walk us through the moment you learned about your nomination?
I saw it on IG lol. Everyone was posting the nomination categories and I saw that Lemonade was nominated twice.
Your new single “America,” your first solo endeavor, debuts July 3rd. Can you tell us about the song and any other future projects you might have?
"America" was a song that I wrote with my friend Tim 3 years ago at like 5 in the morning after a few drinks. It's about the current climate of our nation, which has been this way for as long as I can remember. As for future projects we’ll just have to wait and see!
