Krypto

Born and raised in Miami, Krypto9095 is a professional gamer and rapper who first rose to prominence on YouTube for his channel of the same name. Featuring a mix of highlight reels from his video games and parody videos, the 34 year old has built quite the platform for himself. With over 1.68 million YouTube subscribers and 30,000 on Twitch, Krypto’s even been featured as a top creator on Xbox Live. Besides gaming, he’s also delved into the world of hip-hop. Releasing his debut single in 2018, he’s put forth four more singles, striking gold on his iconic sophomore single, the TikTok megahit, “Woah (feat. D3Mstreet),” the song often credited with popularizing the dance move. We recently spoke with Krypto9095 about his transition from video games to music, what’s coming up, and more!

WIMITLA: We’re so excited to interview you today! Our first question would be “Tell us a little about yourself!”

KRYPTO9095: Yeah, you know they call me Krypto9095. I’ve been doing this YouTube thing for a long time, and I started making music around last year, and the “Woah” song just blew up like crazy.

W: Right, so we were actually going to ask about your music next, so this is a perfect segue. How did you start making music?

K: I started making music when I was doing GTA 5 skits. I started doing a lot of music on there and the fans were loving it! They were saying things like “Oh my god bro, when are you gonna drop this song?” So, I was like alright, if they like my music, I’ll make more.

W: Oh, okay, that’s actually really cool. So, what inspired “Woah,” arguably your most popular song?

K: At the time, the woah was in the beginning stages and people didn’t really know much about the dance yet. I peeped it and thought “Yo bro, this could be a hit right here.” And so I made a song about it so everyone can really start dancing to it, you know what I mean?

W: Right, so obviously the “Woah” song went viral, and it has close to 60 million streams on Spotify. But, can you walk us through the first time you realized that the woah, and your song associated with it, had become a dance phenomenon?

K: Man, I just remember waking up one day and I was getting a lot of notifications and was like “Yo what’s going on?” My phone was buzzing, and I started seeing the streams and people commenting, especially on TikTok, that’s where it really blew up. I saw a lot of people dancing to it and going crazy to it on there, and that's when it really caught my attention. Then Bow Wow started doing it, and a lot of other celebrities started doing it. It was crazy.

W: Yeah for sure. I remember, about a year or so ago, opening up the app and always seeing people getting in a line to hit the woah. So, let’s say it’s your day off: How are you spending it?

K: On my day off, I just like to drink my little champagne and relax, you know? Sometimes, I’ll just watch some TV on Netflix and just vibe.

W: When you made the transition from working in video games to music, why did you decide to keep your gamer tag? It’s a little unorthodox of a stage name, no?

K: Yeah, I know, definitely. I kept it because the fans know me by that name. And that name just stuck with me. Before all the music stuff, I was a YouTuber, and I still am a YouTuber, you know? Since I was a YouTuber first, I kept with it, but, in the music industry, most people do just call me “Krypto.”

W: Yeah, that makes sense. What’s your favorite video game that you’ve played?

K: Hmm, probably GTA or an NBA 2K. Those are my current favorites, at least.

W: Nice. Which of your songs would you say is your most personal?

K: The one I just recently made, “Krypto Story.” It’s basically telling my story about how I started from the bottom. First, I went through difficult times in the hood. I’ve been in jail before, I’ve had somebody snitch on me and stuff like that, you know what I mean? Ever since that day, I’d thought that my life was over but I came to my senses and changed my life around.

W: Wow. So, if you were to make a song with any artist, who would be that artist in this dream collab?

K: It would be someone like Lil Uzi Vert or NLE Choppa.

W: Oh, nice. I guess our last question for you is “Do you have any future projects for fans to get excited about?”

K: I actually do have a song coming up with NLE Choppa. We’re basically doing a remix to “Woah.”

WIMITLA: Oh, so dreams really do come true. Well we’re all looking forward to that, it’s going to be awesome. Those are all the questions we have, thank you so much!

KRYPTO9095: Yeah man, thanks to you too, anytime.
