Candian singer/songwriter Lo Lo is becoming a mainstay on today’s popular music scene. The Toronto-based artist received critical acclaim with her 2018 single “Yours,” which earned her a spot on some of Spotify’s top curated playlists. Her music repertoire has been continuously diverse, featuring everything from electrifying dance beats to bedroom pop harmonies. Her most popular release, “Dancing In The Dark”, was a certified pop hit with over 5.8 million Spotify listens. Adding her 6 other singles and debut album, Sweater Collection, Lo Lo now nears 10 million total streams on the platform. The artist shows no signs of slowing down, as her most recent single, “Dead inside”, premiered on June 12th. We recently spoke with the rising star about her creative process, upcoming projects, and more!

How did you start making music?

I started writing songs at the beginning of high school. I loved to sing from a young age, but I never thought that songwriting would be for me. I had always kept a diary to write down my feelings, but I would never show anyone, of course. So the idea of writing a song and singing my feelings out loud really scared me. My guitar teacher at the time really pushed me to just try writing ONE song, and so I did. To my surprise I really enjoyed it, and it felt natural, I guess because I was so used to writing down my feelings. After that, I became obsessed and haven’t stopped since.

What do you consider the biggest success of your career?

Shortly after releasing my first single, “Yours”, I got chosen to be the IheartRadio Future Star— which meant my song got added all over the radio across Canada. That was probably the coolest part of my career so far. Getting into a car, turning on the radio and hearing yourself…there is truly no feeling quite like it.

What’s your favorite part of creating a song?

Ooo this is a tough one…but I think my favorite part is after I initially record it and get to listen back to it with some production. When it actually starts sounding like a song, that’s my favorite part. It’s a cool moment when something goes from just a little idea in your own head, to a real, tangible thing.

When you’re not making music, what are you doing?

When i’m not making music, you’ll find me either hanging out with my friends, my family, or my dog. I work a lot, so it’s nice to get a break and spend quality time with people I love. I also love TV shows. Sometimes on my days off, I literally just stay in bed all day binging TV shows haha. Right now I’m watching the Vampire Diaries. It’s a great escape.

What do you feel is the most unique thing about your work?

I try to make my lyrics stand out. For me, I love hearing songs with unique lyrics—things that have been said before, but in a completely different way. That’s definitely what I strive for in my own songs.

You’ve done incredibly well on your own. But, if you could pick anyone for a collab, who are you going with?

Thank you so much :) This is another really tough question because there are so many people I’d love to collaborate with…but it’s always been a dream of mine to be on an Eminem song. I always fantasize about being the girl that sings a hook on one of his songs. I’m a big Eminem fan (my dog’s name is Slim, after Slim Shady).

“Dead Inside” is only your latest release. What can Lo Lo fans expect for the future?

I’ve got a few more releases coming out over the next little while and in the Fall I’m releasing an EP, called “Permanent Damage”. I’m naming it “PD” because each song on the EP (including “Dead Inside”) can relate to certain things in my life that have really stuck with me permanently; for the better or for the worse. The artwork for each single is actually a tattoo (made by this crazy talented tattoo artist, Curt Montgomery) for that reason.
