Nick Vyner

Nick Vyner is music; The singer/songwriter grew up singing in choirs, playing in his school band, and recording original demos during his junior year of high school. It was this musical upbringing that clearly paid off. Vyner is the newest signee of 10K Projects and Flighthouse’s joint label, Solo Brightest. “It’s so exciting to be releasing music with a team who believes in you and wants to help execute your vision,” he said. “And I couldn’t be more thrilled to be on the Solo Brightest roster.” After only two years on Spotify, the artist has done well for himself, as recognition on Spotify’s Fresh Finds and Varsity Bars Playlists are a testament to his distinct sound. “Lied” is a fine example of this; the song’s catchy melody and hook work fantastic with the artist’s vocals. The track is currently one of his most popular, too, with over 34k Spotify streams. We recently spoke to Nick about his new record deal, favorite past-times, and more!

Hey Nick! How did you get started making music?

I grew up singing in choirs and playing in band, but I didn’t start writing my own music until my junior year of high school. That year I got a MacBook with Logic on it and started making demos during every spare second I had, whether I was in class or at home.

Congrats on your signing with 10K Projects and Flighthouse’s joint label, Solo Brightest, so happy for you! Can you walk us through the moment?

Thanks so much! You’d think an e-signature doesn’t hit as hard as the pen to paper, but it’s so exciting to be releasing music with a team who believes in you and wants to help execute your vision. And I couldn’t be more thrilled to be on the Solo Brightest roster.

Your label debut, "Mood Swing", comes out really soon -- congrats! What can fans expect from the new release?

Mood Swing is a bit of a departure from the stuff I have out now, so I’m pumped for everyone to hear it. Hopefully, it keeps them guessing as to what’s coming next.

You’ve been making music for some time now, making your SoundCloud debut over four years ago. What has changed most about your music during this time?

The early music still has so much of me in it; now I just know what I want to say and how I want to say it. I can see the story I’m trying to tell.

The writing team has actually been following your music for a couple of months, and we have to say that “Lied To Me” is one of your best yet. What was the inspiration for the track?

“Lied to Me” was inspired by an argument I saw play out at a party during my first year living in LA. It was so petty and dumb and both people felt so intensely that the other was in the wrong. I had my first session with Stanley Randolph (who produced “Mood Swing”) the next day, and that song is what we came out of the studio with.

Is there one song that you heard growing up that shaped your musical style? Why is that?

It’s so hard to pick a single song! Not to be the complete stereotype of a suburban white kid who loves rap, but Because the Internet by Childish Gambino was such a foundational album for me and I think I listened to “Flight of the Navigator” on repeat for what felt like five years. The cinematic quality of that project and that song, in particular, made an indescribable, lasting impact on how I hear music.

Can you tell us about a real-life experience that inspired a song?

My song “Tracing” was inspired by my dreams (or lack thereof.) There was a full year where I didn’t remember a single dream that I had. After my first dream of 2019, I went to the studio with Stanley and that song came out in one huge cathartic burst. It’s a reflection of what dreaming again felt like.

What are some of your favorite things to do outside of the studio?

If I’m not working on music, you can usually find me watching a movie. You can also usually find me watching a movie WHILE I’m working on music. They keep me inspired and full of life.

Who do you owe your biggest thanks to?

My parents, who have always supported my love for music, and all of the music educators who helped build my foundation and intensify my love for the arts.

Lastly, what's next for Nick Vyner?

We dropped “Mood Swing” and then we’re back to working on music to soundtrack 2021. The new year is gonna bring lots of fun stuff.
