$avvy

With only four singles out, $avvy has already established himself as someone to keep an eye out for, especially if you’re interested in lofi rap. Based in Nashville, the 20-year-old artist made his debut last year with “990,” and has since released three more songs (“SNL,” “Bag/Purse,” and--most recently--”Zoom,” released in late October). $avvy’s music is refreshing, light hip hop. His music is catchy and rhythmic, making it easy for the listener to keep it on repeat. A California native, $avvy was originally in a group called the Lil’ Homies before breaking away in hopes of going solo, hopes that have since proved to be plausible. We recently spoke with $avvy about the inspiration behind some of the tracks on his discography, where we can catch the up and coming artist on his day off, and more!

How did you get started making music?

I started making music not too long after I moved here to Nashville from Huntsville, Alabama so a little bit over a year now. I was originally born in Riverside, California. What got me started making music was the collective I was in called the Lil’ homies.

You made your Spotify debut last year. What made 2019 the year to starting releasing music?

I think that it was the fact that I was able to see an opportunity to do something I've always wanted to do, being in a new atmosphere and being in a new group. It was just a time for new endeavors so releasing music under an official streaming platform just fit the theme for the year.

Congratulations on the release of "Zoom." What was the inspiration for the track?

Thank you! I would say the inspiration for that track honestly was just shedding light to not always seeing eye to eye, especially in relationships. A lot of times, I'll draw inspiration from the relationships I've been in whether it be romantic or just between friends, and this one was for sure a nod at my experience in a relationship. Also, I love just making music that gives that head nod and that is also easy to remember and to sing along to, so when I got the beat from my good friend @cam.flp it kinda all just came together.

Walk us through your typical songwriting process.

Honestly I don't think my songwriting process is typical at all. A lot of times it's all over the place and different for each song I write. It's kinda like a matching game, I'll go through any ideas I recorded for melodies on my voice memos or I'll go listen to beats and try to hum something up. Maybe it'll be a phrase I heard on TV or I heard someone say. The writing process can come from so many things that it's hard for me to pinpoint exactly what my writing process is in a sense.

Describe your music is just three words.

Catchy, fun, fluid.

In your opinion does your style differ from other artists in the genre?

For sure, I think that the thing that breaks me away from any other artist is the relativity of my music. I like to refer to my songs as nursery rhymes. While the lyrics may be whimsical and out of the ordinary, the message and the hook will for sure be something that is digestible and memorable that people can resonate with and get behind. I think a lot of artists don't take time to ask themselves would they even listen to this if it wasn't them. For me, it's a perfect balance between making music that you like to make but also making music that other people can enjoy just as much as you .

What is one thing that you would tell your younger self?

I would tell myself to take anything that you do seriously, and if you put enough time and stay consistent with it, it will work. I feel like if I had the determination that I have now back when I was just uploading songs and beats to SoundCloud for a hobby, then I would for sure be ahead of the curve.

Who are you making a song with for a dream collaboration and why?

Tyler the Creator or Drake honestly, and I say that because they both have a lot of my favorite songs in their catalog but also the time and the mind that they put behind their craft leads me to believe that we could make something magical.

What can we catch you doing on your day off?

You can probably catch me with my boys either skateboarding at the park, or hooping at the courts. We like to stay active haha.

Lastly, what's next for $avvy?

Next up is the first studio album by $avvy, entitled boys wear pearls. February 2020. As well as visuals here and there, and maybe a couple throws aways from the album. I don’t know, I'm always creating and coming up with ideas so who knows what's next for sure, but the album is the main project right now.
