Wineson

Wineson

Barcelona, 2018: Solo singer Luke Wineson approaches his friends--drummer Guillermo de León, bassist Johnsy Rizzo, and guitarist Juan Poch--about forming a band. Together they form Wineson, a genre-bending group whose styles range from folk-rock to dream pop and everything in between, creating what they refer to as “Indie-Wine”. A year later, the band released their debut EP, Malbec. The project featured four tracks including their hit single “Daisy,” which dominated the local radio scene for months, even sparking global interest. Recently, the band has released a myriad of singles, including “Mamma’s Party,” “Cute Girl,” and “Lucky Monkey,” independently. They boast an audience of over 94,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, as well as important spots on playlists like Radar Indie, Novedades Viernes España, & Fresh Finds, to name a few. We recently spoke with the up and coming band about how they got their start, some career goals, and more!

How did you start making music?

We all have been playing and writing music for a long time. When Luke came home from his time busking and studying songwriting in Brighton, UK with the idea of making a professional band project, we create Wineson. It’s been 2 crazy years now full of growth and experiences of all kinds.

What is the best part about being in a band?

Probably the best part about being in a band (if you take out the joy that music brings) is that you have a wonderful family. For the good times and the bad ones. We’re always supporting each other. Doesn’t matter what shitty stuff happens. And of course in the good times we’re a f***ing hurricane the four together hahah

Where is your go-to location when it’s time to write?

Actually, we don’t have an specific go-to location when it’s time to write. Normally we just go away in some kinda isolation mood a few days and write music. It’s true we’ve been in Guillermo’s house recently in Costa Brava. Nice one to be away writing music.

Describe your music in just three words.

We don’t really like to fix a description of our music, but maybe we could say: “Listen and Tell” or if you want an specific one “No Calories Sound” or just “Wineson Original Sound”. It’s a precious and messy mix of all kinds of influences.

Let’s talk about the new track. What was the inspiration behind “Lucky Monkey”?

Here’s a good one haha. We use to work with some very toxic people full of negativity in their minds. There was a moment where we couldn’t get more of this negativity and then we took away all of it with this song. Guille came with an idea in mind for the chorus while washing dishes in a restaurant and then we joined to work and create the song together. But in the end the story is about these toxic people you don’t want to be surrounded by. It’s awesome how useful it is for the mental health the songwriting. We stopped working with them obviously and things are wonderful now.

It’s collab time: who are you choosing to make a song with and why?

Buffff this a hard one... We really love artists and have influences of all kinds. Maybe we could say Tyler, The Creator, but maybe has more sense if we say Mac Demarco or Rex Orange County. Collaborating with The Vaccines would be awesome as well. Probably Tyler would be Guillermo’s choice and Mac would be Juana's choice. You better don’t ask Luke or Johnsy because they would say Jose Alfredo Jimenez or El Chapo Sinaloa... or even Will Ferrell hahaha.

Any future Wineson projects for fans to get excited about?

I think we allow ourselves to tell you the premiere... We’re preparing and working on our debut full length album. Booom!
