Sam Stan

Sam Stan

In a time where hip hop is ruled by lyrics of adversity & distress, Sam Stan has built a career from doing the exact opposite. Since the 2014 release of his debut EP, Happy Camper, the artist has challenged listeners to focus on the blessings that surround life’s turmoils. On the project, which features a single of the same name, Stan raps the following: “And I’m on that veggie burger status, boy I don’t want no beef”. This outlook is one of many expressed through what he refers to as “happy raps”. His message of happiness and tranquility is unprecedented and has surely paid off; the 23-year-old self proclaimed “Fresh Prince of Broward County” amassed over 1 million Spotify streams in 2019. On April 20th, he dropped his second album Happy Raps 2, a follow up to 2015’s Happy Rap. The project exhibits him doing what he does so easily as it is filled with catchy hooks and insightful lyrics over distinct beats. With a current following of over 55,000 monthly listeners and several curated Spotify playlists featuring the likes of Smino, JID, & Kenny Beats, the “Fresh Prince” seems to be in good company. We recently spoke to Sam about upcoming releases, songwriting 101, and more!

How did you start making music?

Growing up, everyone freestyled with the homies a little bit. I just happened to be nice. Over time, it became a passion of mine.

Can you describe your music in 3 words?

happy chill vibes.

How do you spend your free time?

These days i’m staying super low key.. rona. But i’m always trying to find ways to stay inspired.. also, a lot of working out and Netflix.

You collaborated on every song on your sophomore album, Happy Raps 2, with Namesake. What’s it like to work so extensively with someone else as a solo artist?

This was the first time locking in with one producer for an entire tape. It’s cool, we’re internet kids. So lots of emails, texts, facetimes, etc.

Speaking of partnerships, who’s working with you in your dream collab?

My dream collab would be the west coast legend, Dom Kennedy.

Can you walk us through your production process, from the songwriting all the way to the eventual release?

I’ll say this. I move off inspiration. If I’m not inspired, I’m living life. The entire process is free, never forced.

Any future projects for fans to get excited about?

In August, i’m doing a weekly series of happy raps releases every Sunday.. also, Happy Raps 2 inspired coloring book.
