Growing up in a musical family, singer/songwriter Alessia Labate picked up her first instrument at a very young age— the artist has seemingly never stopped since. After releasing a collection of singles over the course of 2020, the Milan-based singer has gained a wide fan base of over 300 thousand monthly Spotify listeners. Mixing EDM and dance beats with distinct vocals, her style has become extremely popular, earning her spots on playlists such as the “NCS Top 50” and on Martin Garrix’s radio show. Recent releases such as “Shut Your Mouth (and Dance)” and “Cool” have given Alessia hundreds of thousands of streams across multiple platforms. After starting 2020 on such a high note, she’s looking to cement herself as a mainstay in the EDM community. We recently spoke with Alessia about how she started making music, the future of her career, and more!

How did you get started making music?

I grew up with music as my best friend I guess, but I clearly remember a few important moments. At 8-years-old, I purposely recorded a song with dad in his studio for the first time. At 12, I started picking up instruments (piano, cello, guitar). Around 13 or 14, I discovered songwriting but I was not serious about it— and finally at 18, I studied at CET (prestigious songwriting school) and I realized/decided writing would be my job forever.

Your new single, “Something Special” is set to come out next week! What was your inspiration for writing the song?

I have an unreleased song called "Who Am I". It’s a really old one, and I was tired of hearing that melody in my head each time I heard those chords, so I started playing around with the chords and SS came out. That same day I had a Skype session with Ryan Stewart and we quickly wrapped it up.

It’s collab time: Who are you choosing to make a song with?

I wanna write with FINNEAS and Tove Lo one day. As a vocalist, I'd like to sing for Martin Garrix. And I'd like to do ANYTHING with Oliver Vaughn. Please let me be your slave *jk*.

Favorite non-music activities?

Cooking, Yoga, educating myself about any random thing on YouTube. I'm a really boring person I guess.

Dream venue?

SXSW.

What was the last song you listened to?

“Burnin’”- Nicky Romero featuring my dear friend Jordan Grace. I'm really supportive to my friends :3

What’s next for Alessia Labate?

More singles, collabs, and 100% an EP in 2021.
