After blossoming onto the scene and becoming one of the youngest pop stars of our generation, Billie Eilish has had fans on the edge of their seats in anticipation for her upcoming album Happier Than Ever, which is set to release on July 30. “Lost Cause” establishes a new tone for Eilish’s future project, continuously evolving as she grows up in the public eye. It’s refreshing to see such a talented and young artist sing about things us teenagers have all gone through. The idea of simply singing about heartbreak or love has not been overdone because it creates a space for relatability, connecting fans to an artist. Billie Eilish does just this in “Lost Cause,” along with her other work.

Although many of the same themes from her previous works pervade through this next era of her career, this is not the same old Billie. As she carves out a more distinct sound for herself, it’s clear that her music is maturing along with her. After releasing Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry, an Apple TV+ documentary highlighting her experiences writing, touring, performing, and more, fans were able to gain a greater understanding of the meaning behind her lyrics. The pre chorus to “Lost Cause” is an obvious callback to the instances within the documentary (and surely some instances we did not see) where her boyfriend at the time, Brandon Quenton Adams, also known as “Q,” did not reciprocate the feelings she had for him. It was heartbreaking to watch how hurt she was after her 2019 Coachella performance and this song encapsulates those feelings of sadness and disappointment that come with unrequited love.

“Lost Cause” is the perfect medium between empowerment and heartbreak, with a menacing beat that is accompanied by a juxtaposing set of somber vocals. From the content of the lyrics, we’d suggest that this is the type of song you’d listen to months after the breakup, rather than immediately following, making it feel retrospective in a way. Whereas in previous songs Billie is heartbroken, in this one, she reflects on her past experiences.  “Lost Cause” is a way for her fans to understand that time will heal all wounds and they should strive for better treatment, rather than settling for less. 7.5/10
