There are infinite words to describe the beauty of Clairo’s voice. There are somehow even more words to describe how beautiful that voice shines in her newest release, “Blouse.” The track is a somber and melancholy dive into the emptiness that Clairo feels towards interpersonal relationships that lack emotional depth and only exist for physical desires. Her need to be valued, not just objectified, is a feeling that is extremely familiar for so many young women today, and Clairo uses her well-established lyrical skill to express her frustrations and sadness.

Clairo’s music is practically its own genre at this point. While she may not have created bedroom pop, she most definitely was one of the biggest catalysts for its sudden rise in popularity during the 2010s. Her sweet, delicate voice makes even the most tragic and ugly of ideas sound so pure every time she sings. So many artists have attempted to replicate the vibe that Clairo’s music popularized, but none truly do it as well as her. This song is merely a reaffirmation of that. Switching producers to Jack Antonoff, famous for collaborations with Taylor Swift and Lorde, adds a beautiful texture to what would otherwise be your average somber ballad. Not only that, but the warm record noise in the background gives the song a nostalgic feel that brings it all together to make a beautiful, heartfelt, transformative piece of music.

Overall, Clairo doesn’t seem to have the ability to make bad music. She simply cannot disappoint. This track is no different. From the production to vocals, it is a well-rounded and heavenly song that only adds to our anticipation for her new album Sling, set to release on July 16th. 8/10
