Rapper-singer Neemz’ recently released single and accompanying video, “Toxic Attachments” displays the diverse range of talent that embodies her artistry. The Boston-based Palestinian’s creative outlets include poetry, photography, modeling, creative directing, music, and for the first time as credited on “Toxic Attachments,” producing. Neemz has made waves modeling, appearing as the first featured hijabi model for Bodega: Nike x Mathew Williams Collection as well as walking the runway for KidSuper in New York Fashion Week.
On “Toxic Attachments” Neemz is credited as creative director, co-director, stylist, and co-producer. Her holistic creative engagement creates a truly individualized and unique artistic experience. “Toxic Attachments” opens with a snappy drum beat. Just as the beat begins to induce head bopping, Neemz slides in her radiant vocals, harmonizing, “Can’t wait on nobody cause they waste all my time. I just see the vision and I got to get it right.” The lyrical content on the track delves into toxicity through emotional attachments with the outer-world, monitoring wellbeing, living in the present, and gratitude. In the video description, Neemz writes, “‘Toxic Attachments’ is about the emotional bonds we create & the energy imbalance that happens when we focus on the outer-world more than we focus on ourselves, the inner-world.” The song is a staple amongst the alternative hip-hop releases of 2022.
The visual for “Toxic Attachments” is striking. Neemz speaks equally as loud in her work as a stylist, creative director, and co-director as she does as a vocalist. The visuals begin with an eerie car ride between Neemz and a figure dressed in a black cloak holding a stopwatch as lines of text are displayed. The closing line reads “... it’s feeling toxic” as the scene changes and the beat is introduced. The visuals and scenes in “Toxic Attachments” are captivating. For most of the video, Neemz and a group of faceless backup dancers don a chic outfit that pairs a black dress and white dress shirt with a black bucket hat, hijab, and converse high tops. Another standout visual depicts Neemz in an exuberant green suit while being suspended upside down by a leash of black drapery. The video is packed with symbols and choreography that accentuate the song's themes.
