Jonny Morales (@jonnym0rales) is an entertainer who uses his Mexican heritage as the vehicle for creative comedic content. The TikToker is known best for videos featuring his mother and girlfriend, who bring an element of surprise unlike any other account on the app. According to Morales, his mother loves creating the videos that have made his account so popular in recent months; she’s even started her own account! In most of his content, Jonny often jokes about his upbringing, using different aspects of his culture in short comedy bits. In just over one year, he has amassed a large social media following of over 600k TikTok followers with nearly 24 million likes. We recently talked to Jonny about his hilarious videos, plans for the future, and more!
Tell us a little about yourself?
I was born and raised in Wilmington, North Carolina, a super chill beach town where everyone goes and surfs on their downtime! While growing up, I’ve had two huge passions: the medical field and video production. When I’m not studying for my biology degree, I’m a wedding videographer and a production volunteer at my church. I know without a doubt my career is going to utilize one or the other, or maybe even both. And even though I’m not sure what that looks like, I trust it’ll work out for good.
How did you get started making TikToks?
I actually first downloaded the app to make fun of my girlfriend’s little sister since she had several thousands followers last summer in 2019 (@lilsprowt). It started with me scrolling through all of her videos, then I started scrolling on the for you page. Just like everyone else who spends a few hours on the app, I was hooked. From there, I would periodically post videos to the trends that were relevant at the time. I’ve always gravitated towards making videos, whether it’s for a school project or a home made video, so Tiktok became a platform that nurtured my passion. Fortunately in November of last year, my account started growing after I had a video go viral that included my mother and girlfriend.
Where do you get inspiration from when making your content?
My inspiration definitely comes from spending time with those I love most. Some of my most viral videos have been raw moments captured on camera when my mom, girlfriend, and I are doing something goofy. Other times we are simply hanging out and we brainstorm skits based off of true events that have happened. When I take some of my favorite moments spent with my family, and create a video inspired by those silly moments, it definitely pays off in the end.
A lot of your videos include those with your mom. What does she think about your recent TikTok fame?
My mom LOVES it. She is without a doubt my number one supporter. It’s the best feeling when she tells me she shares my videos to her friends and family in Mexico. In fact, my mom loves it so much, she begged me to make her an account! She is a chef, so she decided to get TikTok to make cooking videos, with a sprinkle of comedy videos. How has quarantine changed your ability to create content?
Quarantine was a HUGE boost in helping me create content. I would be lying if I said it wasn’t a struggle at first, especially because I am also inspired by daily life and what I experience, so my creativity gears had a sudden stop. Fortunately, All the time spent sitting in my room led to more time thinking of content ideas and producing more videos. My girlfriend also came over a lot to make videos because both our families quarantined, so we only saw each other to stay safe. As a result, my channel doubled in following a few months into quarantine.
Who are you partnering up with in a dream collaboration?
Without a doubt, the one and only Mr. Beast. We’re both from North Carolina, so I would kill to even just spend a day shadowing him as a content creator. I’ve been watching him for so long, it’s been amazing seeing him put in so much hard work and invest in himself because he believed in himself, even when his account was small. Since he was able to do that, he has become one of the biggest Creators out there. It would be a blessing to get the opportunity to work with one of the creators that inspires me to go big, or go home when I working on my videos! And last but not least, he just seemed like the friendliest human being.
What is your favorite TikTok trend out now?
Easy. The Whole Lotta Choppas dance made by @ohbukster. Even though I don’t do dances on tiktok, my girlfriend and I CANNOT stop doing this dance! We will literally look at each other and immediately start doing the dance. It’s also super easy but so addicting.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
I would want to know every language in the world as my superpower! I love meeting new people and building relationships, so I would love this to make friends no matter where I go. It also be fun to go to another country and listen to people talk about me and pretend like I don’t understand, and then go off on them in that language.
Any future projects for fans to get excited about?
I recently just went to Charleston, South Carolina to go film with a show on Netflix called Outerbanks! Keep an eye out for when season two comes out because I may or may not make a cool appearance!! You’ll just have to wait and see!
