Singer/Songwriter birdtunes brings to the table a new, dreamy soundscape in his music. Combining LoFi, dreampop, indie, and soul influences into his style, his songs are simply another language with which he can express himself in. The Bay Area artist is fairly new to the music scene, only dropping his impressive debut single, “Won’t You Say”, in 2019. The song currently has over 40K streams and was the perfect introduction to the releases that would follow. “Talk” and “Everything” are both wonderful examples of his distinct style. He’s been featured on Spotify’s Fresh Finds and Fresh Finds: Indie playlists, and has gained a following of over 7K monthly listeners on the platform. We can’t wait to see the evolution of his style and career as he continues to release music. We recently spoke with birdtunes about his dream collab, his inspiration when making music, and more!

How did you start making music?

I started secretly singing in middle school, but didn’t actually start making my own music until about three years ago. I remember it was summer after college graduation, I was unemployed, and spending way too much time on YouTube. On one of my mindless YouTube binges, I stumbled across Clairo’s “Pretty Girl” video and was so intrigued by the simple yet beautiful sonic aesthetic. This video served as my first exposure to the realm of Bedroom Pop, and inspired me to try my hand at making music. Soon after I started messing around on Garageband and I guess the rest is history!

It’s your day off: How are you spending it?

I live a pretty low-key life since I’m naturally introverted, so my ideal day off would probably consist of me staying in my room watching some Netflix, going down a YouTube wormhole, writing a song I probably won’t finish, scrolling on IG and TikTok, and listening to Spotify’s Lorem playlist (chef’s kiss). If I’m feeling really adventurous, I may even step outside, go to my car, and drive myself to the local McDonald’s to grab a McFlurry. I guess sometimes I can be pretty wild.

Who’s your choice for a dream collab?

There’s so many people that my music is inspired by like Umi, Clairo, Joji, Rei Brown, Still Woozy, Niki, No Rome, Deb Never, Cuco, Omar Apollo come to mind. But if I had to choose one person I would like to collab with, it would have to be keshi. His music, bar none, has had the biggest impact on how I go about producing my own music, so to be able to work with him would be a dream!

Describe your music in just 3 words.

Sleepy, soft, and smooth.

Which of your songs was your favorite to write and why?

“Everything,” my most recent single was probably my favorite to write because it was the first song I created where I challenged myself to improve as a producer. Staying on brand to the themes I usually write about (loneliness, unrequited love, dependency, other happy stuff), I also think creating “Everything” helped me discover a new sound that I want to expand upon with future releases.

Where do you draw inspiration from when making music?

I almost always write about other people’s lives and hypothetical situations I make up in my head. For me, it’s so much easier to write about things I observe rather than my own experiences. I definitely need to overcome that mental wall, but once I do, Shakespeare better watch out.

Any future projects for fans to get excited about?

Yes! I’m currently finishing up my first EP which I hope to drop in the next few months so stay on the lookout for that! In the meantime, I’m pretty active on socials as @birdtunes or @itsbirdtunes so let’s be friends :)
