Modern-Day Rock Star Gone ‘Til Monday is simply a genre-bending talent. The artist combines a skilled flow with his infectious beats. His debut single, the acoustic “Bottled Up (2017)”, was released in 2019; it was a wonderful preview to the music that he would drop throughout the year. Since being featured on Spotify’s Varsity Bars and Fresh Finds playlists, his audience has grown to more than 7 thousand monthly Spotify listeners. With a growing fanbase, this only seems to be the start of an exciting music journey. We recently spoke with Gone Till’ Monday about his personal life, his dream collab, and more!
How did you start making music?
it was never a conscious decision for me to make music. it just sorta happened. my love for music was prevalent throughout my entire life , but i think something really clicked when i was 7 years old. My mom got me a karaoke machine and i used to buy instrumental cds and jump up on the couches performing and recording myself on it. i think i recorded my first song when i was 10 on an old desktop usb mic. that was back in the audacity days and i would rip beats off soundclick (shoutout johnny juliano lol). I was living in Indiana at the time and i had an older cousin out in california who started to send me beats and we crafted our own sound together. he’s actually the reason i got into production myself. looking back, i think my passion for writing and poetry really came into play when my parents split, and my dad left the picture. music was a great means to express myself because naturally i bottle everything up. thats pretty much how that happened. i didn’t ask to be given this much passion and drive to create music. its a blessing and somewhat of a curse. i only say that because sometimes i wish i could have lived a more “normal” life , whatever that is.
It’s your day off: How are you spending it?
im always just working on music in one way or another. but i guess making music isnt really work at all. if i don’t make a song or lay down an idea for over a day i start to feel horrible about myself. i truly believe if it wasn’t for my ability to express myself through sound, i wouldn’t still be here. sorry mom. i mean, i guess if im not making music im probably just poppin painkillers, watching movies, and eating pop eyes (lemme get a spicy # 6 with fries and a strawberry fanta).
Who’s your choice for a dream collab?
oh boy. i wanna get billie joe armstrong or brendon urie on a song with kid cudi. kanye west and lauryn hill. LANA F*CKING DEL REY, shes my spirit animal. i also really like this guy Benjamin Tod, hes one of the most vulnerable songwriters ever to me. oh and cody chesnutt, nate ruess, and Lil Baby. other than vocalists. i need super producers Emile Haynie and Jeff Bhasker on my debut album.
What was the last song you listened to?
Mustafa - Stay Alive. i can’t get over how incredible that song is.
Where do you draw inspiration from when making music?
the soul. i could be watching a movie or listening to a song and hear some chord progression and it just sends me down a spiral. i have really intense tunnel vision when i work and often times when im done and step back to hear what i made ,its super foreign. it feels like the songs wrote themselves.
Tell us about your experiences in the music industry as an up-and-comer.
although my music is new to the world, i certainly don’t feel like an up and comer. its been a long long road ive traveled for over 10 years. but u know, i almost prefer it that way. i don’t wanna be one of these guys who gets a hit song and disappears. i want the longevity of michael jackson and the beatles and i won’t stop at anything to get that. over the years its been fairly difficult for me to let the world know i make music without feeling scrutinized, because in this day and age where virtually anyone can release a song, theres a lack of substance out there and i don’t want to be categorized with those guys. i’m not in this for fame, i want the power to influence and change.
Any future projects for fans to get excited about?
man i got thousands of songs ready to drop, its all about the timing for me. i’m not really focused on creating projects at the moment because when i do , i need it to be a super cohesive body of work that stands the test of time executed precisely from my imagination. also i want more of the worlds attention before im ready to release one, i don’t think im there yet.
