Sally Sossa

The Light At The End of The Tunnel

By Eugene Yi

Grounded in her spirit and guided by her heart, Sally Sossa is quickly taking over the hip-hop industry. At only 20 years old, the artist has dropped numerous mixtapes, signed with Interscope Records, and released her debut EP Life of Sossa, in which “Star Song” feat. Lil Durk has become a viral hit with over 23 million Spotify streams. She is currently working on 4Ever Sossa, her sophomore project which is set to release this year that boasts features with Toosii and Flo Milli.

When asked about the upcoming EP, Sossa described it as “unskippable” and teased new songs “Zodiac Signs” and “Toot it Up” feat. Flo Milli. “‘Zodiac Signs’ is my baby. I had to find the perfect beat, and I had to make sure that I lifted up and talked about each zodiac sign. I wanted to make sure that the song embodied the whole aspiration of everyone tapping into their horoscope, without being afraid of who they are.” The record aims to dispel the negativity that frequently surrounds zodiac signs, as Sossa says she wants listeners to return to the track to feel empowered and proud of everything that makes them unique. She even described it as “one of the top favorite records that [she’s] created.”

When speaking about “Toot it Up,” a track meant to make listeners feel confident and sexy, Sossa expressed how challenging it was to produce. It was a new experience talking about her body and features in such an explicit manner. “That was the first raunchy record that I have created. I don’t make music talking about my body, I don’t make music talking about my butt. This was the first song where I created talking about my physical attributes. And it was hard.” She also touted the presence of her friends in the studio that day to give her the energy and confidence to carry out the song's message: to love yourself, love your body and always live your best life.

If anything is evident from these upcoming tracks and her previous EP, it's that Sally Sossa speaks from the heart to empower others and lighten up lives. When asked what inspires and motivates her to make music, she answers surprisingly, stating pain as her fuel. “What inspires me to make music is my pain; I’ve grown up going through a lot of hardships. I also feel a certain responsibility when it comes to expressing my pain, but giving my listeners motivation and hope to know whatever they’re going through, they’re going to be okay, and it will get better.”

Having left home at 16, Sossa had to discover who she was and who she ultimately wanted to be, all the while maturing on her own. Though many would choose to isolate and protect themselves from the unfair reality they were thrust into, Sossa decided to use her pain to help others around her that may be in a similar situation. Against all odds, she chose a path of light and gratitude. “I felt neglected. And that feeling of neglect, you can either go and try to start a family of your own, to feel loved, or you can go build your legacy.” And her legacy is surely in the works.

Sossa also explains that the experience molded her into a smarter and stronger individual. It also made her realize that she would always have her faith to guide and support her in whatever struggles may come her way. “At the end of the day, I have God, and I don’t need to feel alone, because I’m not. I’m not alone. There are so many other people in the world that go through what I go through, so that was a push for me to create music because there are a lot of people who feel depressed. Who feel alone. Who feel abandoned. And you have to find that good tune in your heart to pick up on that beat.”

Through her music, Sossa wants listeners to fall in love with life and focus on their blessings. After finding her way out of the darkness to find the light that inspires her, she is committed to helping others do the same. She understands not only how it feels to be at your lowest but also - and more importantly - how to rise above it and find happiness again. It is because of that understanding that Sally Sossa is able to connect with her fans on a deeper level and why she is destined to be a star.
