Savannah Sgro

Savannah Sgro

The late 2010s saw the rise of the very genre Savannah Sgro specializes in: sad girl pop. Often referred to as “bedroom pop” when including all genders, Sgro’s lugubrious yet light hits epitomize this new style of pop, marking Savannah as a pioneer in the field. She’s ever on the rise, her most recent single, “Talk Shit,” amassing over 210k sreams and counting on Spotify in under a month, far from her highest stream count on an individual song. Sgro made her debut in 2018 with her single “Phobia,” but the Las Vegas-born-and-raised, Nashville-based artist’s since released an eponymous EP in 2019, as well as 5 more singles, all of which have a total of 27 million streams across all platforms. With a tour planned for this year that was inevitably postponed, it’s safe to say that Sgro has a full plate when life gets fully back on track, and we can’t wait to watch her do it all. We recently spoke with Savannah about her goals when it comes to music, to whom she owes her thanks, and more!

How did you get started making music?

When I was young, I played piano by ear and eventually just started making stuff up lol which led to writing songs/writing lyrics.

What would you say is the most special/unique thing about your music?

My goal is to write songs I feel like can stand alone with just a guitar or keyboard, like country storytelling, but with pop melodies!!

Let's talk about "Talk Shit". What’s the song about and what does it mean to you?

This song is about when my ex and I broke up and I was telling all of my closest friends over and over again how bad he was to me to try to convince myself that it actually was going to be better for me to be alone than to stay with him. I was going back and forth and really needed friends there to tell me I was doing the right thing.

Do you even encounter writer's block? If so, how do you get past it?

I go through writer’s block when I don’t take enough time to recharge. I feel like I finally realized last year the importance of taking breaks and doing things that aren’t music related sometimes is OKAY. Haha If I ever feel stumped, I usually take time to go sit outside, or go for a walk and come back to it a few hours later or the next day.

What advice do you have for an artist about to release their debut song?

I would say to dig in and really try to find playlists of related artists (that they think they would also fit on), and also blogs they have gotten onto!! Then, try to find who makes those playlists/blogs and find their contact info! Also, have friends help you out by pre-saving the song on the platforms and have people follow you on Spotify!

What’s the perfect occasion to listen to some Savannah Sgro?

Post break up or a Girl’s Night!

What can we catch you doing on your day off?

Days off, I will be watching reality TV, or hanging out with friends!

Who do you owe your biggest thanks to?

Biggest thanks to Carrie Cheron, (my college voice teacher), who literally CHANGED the way I sing. She would tell me when I was doing something that wasn’t authentic and it just made me overall try to stop changing things about myself that were weird and just embrace it!!! ALSO, Jacob Kasher. I met him in March, and ever since, he has been one of the biggest believers in my music and it has been crazy to have someone help me that I look up to so much. He helped push “Talk Shit” and is the reason so many doors are opening right now.

What's next for Savannah Sgro?

Next is more music ;)
