Taste of Pluto
A Caribbean consortium, Taste of Pluto successfully bridges the musical gap between old school and new school. The trio — composed of members Navy, Marwin, and Ty Benjamin — is a self-described “hip hop collective” that also incorporates elements of reggae and LoFi pop into their work. Only making their streaming debut in 2020, the band already has 3 singles (most notably “Scorpio’s Letter - Remix”), 175k Spotify streams, and places on 5 Spotify-curated playlists. The releases have garnered quite the traction for Taste of Pluto, who currently have a record deal with the Barbadian independent record label Pretty Boy Worldwide. With more music on the way, it is clear that the best is yet to come. We recently spoke with the group about time out of the studio, their difficulties regarding the coronavirus pandemic, and more!
How did you start making music?
We started making music at a writing camp about a year ago in Barbados together. We tried out a few different sounds, trusted the process until we found our sound.
Describe your music in 3 words.
Thought Provoking, Spiritual, Vibes
What inspired your song “Scorpio’s Letter”?
The inspiration behind the song "Scorpio's Letter" was a love letter that was written to Navy by a secret admirer.
What has been the hardest part of this quarantine for you?
Looking at the news and learning of the negative effects, and listening to people's accounts of their realities and experiences. Some people lost so many friends and family members. Through the efforts of our label, however, we managed to stay focused and at work during the lockdown, even though we felt a little anxious about being away from home and not knowing when we would be able to travel again.
Most artists have a dream venue. Where’s yours?
Coachella & Glastonbury
It’s collab time: who are you choosing to make a song with?
Definitely Kendrick Lamar. Such an inspiring and true artist.
What does the group do in their free time?
We each have our hobbies and past times. As a group we watch documentaries about people we feel have shaped our lives and love for music. We also try out each other's favorite recipes and discuss our hilarious childhood experiences.
What’s next for Taste of Pluto?
Whats next for Taste of Pluto is more music, our debut EP and some live performances by Fall.
