BROCKHAMPTON
“Count On Me”
WIMITLA. SONG REVIEW
By Alix Sholomon and Elie Weitzman
After the release of “BUZZCUT'' last week, we had high hopes for the future of BROCKHAMPTON, excited for a new sound. Usually, singles are released before an entire album to tease fans and entice listeners; however, after hearing “COUNT ON ME” featuring A$AP Rocky, Shawn Mendes, and Ryan Beatty, the direction of the band’s music is left questionable. With an amalgamation of featured artists, all within different areas of the music industry, the sound of the song lends itself more to a boyband-esque style of pop with an occasional rap verse.
BROCKHAMPTON has always been a boyband in name, with many of their songs falling into that category. They have always said that they are a boy band since the start of their young careers, but this song feels a bit too on the nose with that label. Gone are the experimental beats and energetic lyric delivery that their tracks are always filled with. Instead, this feels like a somewhat lazy rendition of a song that might’ve shown much more promise had they taken it in a different direction. The hook is predictable and boring, the instrumental offers nothing new, and the song feels comparatively dull next to the rest of their discography. Whilst we discussed the general shying away from conventional Billboard Hits from Brockhampton with the release of “BUZZCUT,” “COUNT ON ME” feels like the perfect cash grab for the band with big household names to back it up. Big groups looking to change their sound with a new album often release two singles ahead of time in order to acclimate fans new and old to the direction they hope to take their music in. However, this release felt completely out of the blue with how unexciting it was. Not even features from the industry’s biggest names could save what we consider to be a completely underwhelming track.
This hasn’t turned us off completely from our favorite rap boyband. However, it is a bit concerning that this was the type of song they considered to be “single” material. If anything, it only detracted from our hype around their new album, a feeling we do not relish in having. We just hope they can find their sound and stick to it, while also staying true to being the musicians they want to be. Liking this song doesn’t mean you aren’t a true fan. But it sure isn’t for everyone either. 4.5/10
