Maihua Lee is simply one of TikTok’s most prominent rising stars. The entertainer uses her account to create relatable content for the LGBTQ+ community and as a stepping stone for an acting career. Sometimes she just fools around, sometimes she makes POVs, and sometimes she dances. Regardless of what she’s posting, her devoted fanbase certainly shows love to her unique content. Maihua currently has 2.1 million followers and a whopping 179.5 million total likes. Her personality, sense of humor, and creativity all contribute to her ability of making content that truly speaks to her audience. Now, with a new song ready to release and a huge audience waiting to listen, the next phase of her career has only just begun. We recently spoke with Maihua about her dream TikTok collab, where she gets her inspiration, and more!
Did you have any specific plans or ideas when you joined TikTok?
I think I was looking for some type of family or community of my own. I also saw an article about some guy getting an acting gig from being on TikTok. I have always wanted to be an actress, so I saw this as an opportunity to grow and spread more LGBTQIA awareness with my own story.
What do you think is special about TikTok that sets it apart from other similar platforms?
I think TikTok has more options when it comes to interacting with fans and allowing the users to really create their own communities. The app is what you make of it, unfortunately that means sometimes negative things come from it but when there is positivity it’s extremely powerful. You can do what you love and connect with people who love it too. I have 2m people I am proud to call friends and family.
Who’s the TikToker of your choice for a collab?
I want to collab with… that’s a hard question. The people I have collabs with already have been some of my dreams. If I was reaching for the stars, I would say Charli D’Amelio. She has an old soul, she inspired the entire platform and it would be an honor to work with someone who helped make the place I now have a career on.
Where do you get inspiration from when making TikToks?
TikTok on its own is full of inspiration. You can see one person do something and then the next day see so many different versions of the same idea, with credit to the creator. I am inspired by my life, my struggles and the followers I have. I was inspired to make my own song just by seeing all the talent across TikTok, that’s powerful.
Do you have a favorite genre of TikTok content?
POVs and of course dancing. Acting is my art, it’s a truly evolved thing when it comes to TikTok. As a content creator we have so many ways of filming or making our art, TikTok is a new medium for that.
What’s your favorite trend?
Acting Challenges, but my favorite is the Switch Emotion ones. I like them because they really show what people can accomplish artistically. It’s just amazing what can come from a person and their cell phone.
What was the last song you listened to?
Our song Voicemail(faded). I wish this was me bragging but really it’s just because we listen to it constantly as we are preparing for the release. I think the sound is different so it sticks with you.
What are you planning for the future?
Right now I am focusing on my acting career. Social media was just the start of my journey and I’m so thankful this was the route I could start with. If our fans enjoy our song I may focus my attention on a full album but the future is bright either direction.
