Trevor Abney

St. Louis native Trevor Abney’s comedy videos have elevated the 20-year-old to TikTok stardom. Since his August 2019 debut, the social media star has only continued to grow, earning close to 850k followers on the app. Widely known for his personas like “Mom” and “Ms. Smith,” characters like these have helped the comedian amass over 30.7 million likes. Abney initially went to Northwest Missouri State for baseball, later transferring to a school in his home city to continue his athletic journey. Since the emergence of COVID-19, the creator has used the quarantine to focus on growing his TIkTok following, coaching a summer baseball team, and starting on another popular platform: YouTube. We recently spoke with Trevor about his comedic inspirations, plans for growing his social media presence, and more!

Did you have any specific plans or ideas when you joined Tik Tok?

When I first joined, I did not have any specific plans. I was just doing it randomly one day with my girlfriend and our first video went kind of viral (like 10k views), and I actually quit after my first 10 or so videos for almost a month. Then, I got back into it and haven’t quit since.

What are some of your favorite (non social media) activities?

Aside from social media I love to workout and play baseball. I also like eating good food and meeting new people. Partying as well!

Who would you say is/are your biggest idols?

I looked up to a Youtube streamer named Nick Eh 30 for a long time. He was one of the reasons why I wanted to start YouTube. Now I look up to people like Bryce Hall. Not necessarily “look up to” but I think he’s super dope and would love to be a part of that Sway House that they have eventually.

You’ve developed more than a few recurring characters in your TikToks. How did you come up with them?

I came up with the characters in my TikToks from past experiences. I was trying to be relatable and funny and it kind of hit off. I realized that just having a “Mom” character wouldn’t be enough. So I added “Dad” “Ms. Smith (Trevor’s teacher),” “Grandma,” and “Grandpa” (more coming soon😉).

Would you ever consider taking on a career in social media from this success?

Yes! I would love to have a career in social media. I am making decent money doing it right now, but really would love to make a huge career out of it. YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, all of it! I love the potential it has and the awesome people you can meet through it. I would almost say that I am determined to make a career out of what I’ve built so far.
